Have you noticed that the desire to grow and "advance" is inherent in human beings? The need to go up in a certain field... History, as well as the many different cultures today, can provide countless examples.

The hierarchy at the company you work for. You just can't wait to get promoted to a higher position. The army: all the way back to ancient times (the Romans, for example) until today, they always had grades and soldiers always wanted to go up in rank. Prestige classes in Dungeon and Dragons. The apprentice who wants to become a master in any field. Japanese and korean martial arts.

That last example is why I am posting this. Today I went from white belt to yellow belt in Sogo Budo, my first grade passage. I knew I was ready, and I did it. Now, I am setting a goal for myself. Orange belt in December!
