If there was one thing Rodney McKay hated it was being right all the time. His team had drawn the short straw again and he knew it from the start, which was really weird because usually it was one or all of the rest of his team that would get an odd feeling once they stepped from the gate.
But now because no one listened to him, he was separated from his team and in the middle of a civil war. Oh and someone seemed to be jamming all radio signals since the attack on the capital city began.
Rodney’s gut feeling had stemmed from the fact that these people were clearly technologically advanced but did nothing with their technology. He knew if he had items as they did at his disposal he would be using them quite frequently.
These people, he forgot what they were called and currently didn’t give a damn, wouldn’t even speak about the tech. Rodney had to learn what he could from books in their library and even that was limited.
He told Sheppard and the others that being there was a complete waste of time. Even if those people had some kind of weapon that could help defeat the Wraith they weren’t in a sharing kind of mood.
So now Rodney was sitting behind what remained of the senate building and holding a broken wrist close to his body. He wasn’t going to be able to type for a while and that seemed to piss him off the most.
Rodney nearly had a heart attack when a strong hand clasped him on the shoulder. He tried to get away, but the hand would not let go of him. “Easy, McKay!”
“Damn it, Ronon! You scared the crap out of me.”
“Sorry.”
Rodney looked up at the gash above the Satedan’s left eye. “You okay?”
“Yeah. You?”
“Broken wrist,” he muttered. “When will you three learn to listen to me?”
Ronon glared at him. “McKay the last three or four times you thought we were in danger nothing happened. Besides we can’t always live in fear that something’s going to go wrong!”
“Why is it when any of you get worried, we double back to the gate?”
“I’d love to continue this conversation and go over statistics with you, but right now we need to locate Sheppard and Teyla and get to the gate.”
Rodney huffed but shut his mouth. Ronon nodded and the two men raced into the dark woods to locate their friends.

Teyla looked around at the people around her. She and John had been trying to help as many of the young children and elderly as they could. It was true they had no idea as to the cause of this civil war, but the innocent needed to be protected.
“Teyla!” John exclaimed, rushing over to her. “There’s nothing more we can do! We’ve gotta find Rodney and Ronon and get the hell out of here!”
She nodded in agreement and the pair ran towards the woods dodging bullets and arrows. Teyla nearly screamed when she saw John trip, hit the ground hard and was suddenly rolling down a hill.
Teyla had to duck out of the way for a few minutes before she could go after him. Once the people chasing them disappeared, Teyla ran to where she had seen John fall. It was dark, but she could see his form about 20 feet down.
Slowly she went down the hill being careful to watch for any protruding rocks or roots. It took forever but she finally reached him. “John!” she called, kneeling beside her friend. He was on his back unconscious and Teyla winced at the bluish purple bruise that had formed on the left side of his face.
John moaned as he came to. “Teyla?” he whispered.
“Yes, John, I am here!”
“What the hell happened?”
“You seemed to have tripped over something and rolled down a hill.”
“Not very graceful of me,” John replied, attempting to sit up. “Good thing Rodney wasn’t here to witness that!”
John was a bit confused because he seemed to recall feeling a sharp pain in his lower back just below his TAC vest. He paused in his movement he noticed the pain returned in that same spot.
“John?” Instead of replying he reached behind him and felt the stickiness of blood. When he brought his hand back around, Teyla gasped. “By the Ancestors!”
“Teyla, easy!” John exclaimed as she checked his wound.
“I am sorry,” she replied, “but you have lost much blood. Can you stand?”
John shrugged, pointing up the hill. “Not sure, but we need to go either way.”
They had been running for nearly 20 minutes when John fell to his knees hard. Teyla tried to get him up, but he had already lost way too much blood. She knelt down to bandage his wound.
“Leave it, Teyla,” he said. “Just get to the gate and call for back up.”
“No, John! I am not going to leave you here alone. Besides what would Ronon and Rodney think about you giving up?”
“I’d say I wouldn’t let you live it down.”
The pair looked up to see their friends standing beside them. “You just couldn’t get out of this without being shot, could you?” Rodney asked with a grin.
“You know me, anything for a party!” John replied.
Teyla shook her head at the men as she completed the first aid on John’s wound. She wasn’t sure if he had been shot or injured himself in the fall because right now she didn’t have time to search for a bullet.
Ronon helped John to his feet. “The gate should be about three miles south of here,” he said.
“What are we waiting for?” Rodney asked. “Let’s get moving!”
Soon the team began their three mile hike. John’s legs felt like rubber and no longer seemed to care that Ronon had picked him up and was running towards the gate carrying him like a sack of potatoes.
They were just about there when a shout was heard and suddenly they were surrounded. Someone grabbed John by his TAC vest and pulled him onto the ground where he landed directly on his injury.
“Careful!” Rodney cried out before he could even think. One of the men would have clocked him a good one if Teyla hadn’t moved in front of him. And it seemed they didn’t want to hit a woman.
“I do not know for which side you fight, but we are peaceful travelers who have been caught up in your civil war we knew nothing about!” she said, eyes flashing angrily. “My friends are injured and all that we ask is that we be allowed access to the Ring of the Ancestors to return home!”
The men studied her for a moment before nodding at one another in agreement. “You will have protection to the gate, which is just through those trees.”
Ronon helped John to his feet again. “Sorry, buddy,” he muttered.
“Never knew you were such a fan of torturing people.”
“It’s a gift.”
Everything was a blur for John as he heard Rodney tell Teyla to dial the Alpha site. Good thinking, Rodney, thought John.
Once they got to the other side John had Ronon put him down. Whatever the hell he was hit with in his back was killing him and it was all he could do not to cry out. He clenched his eyes shut as the pain radiated through his body.
“You guys have to… to get the med team out here,” John gasped out. “Whatever I was hit with it’s practically burning a hole through my skin!”
Rodney stared at his friend in stunned silence. Sheppard had a high threshold for pain so when he admitted to it hurting, he really meant it. Forgetting his own injury, Rodney went to the DHD to dial the address for Atlantis.
While Ronon sat with John, Teyla checked on the scientist who had stopped dialing the address. “Rodney?”
“I’m fine!” he replied, changing to his uninjured had to finish dialing. He explained the situation to Atlantis who would be sending a Jumper through. Once the call was completed, he finally looked at Teyla. “What?”
Teyla took his good hand and had him sit down. “You are injured as well, Rodney.”
“I know, I just didn’t want to act like a baby over a broken wrist when Sheppard…” he trailed off looking helplessly at his friend.
She nodded. “I understand what you mean, Rodney, but you need to take care of yourself as well. Isn’t that what we always tell John?”
“Not that he ever listens,” Rodney muttered.
“No,” she replied, “and we wouldn’t want him any other way.”

John woke up for a short time while Carson was stitching his wound. “Colonel,” he said with a smile.
“Doc, isn’t that a nurses job?”
Carson chuckled. “My face isn’t pretty enough for you?”
“Don’t make me laugh!” John gasped out in pain.
“Sorry. There, all finished!”
John looked past Carson. “So where is everyone?”
“I sent them to their quarters for rest. Teyla escaped injury, Ronon had a cut above his eye which should heal nicely, and Rodney has a broken wrist.”
John closed his eyes. “That’s good. I’m hoping Elizabeth locked the address to that planet.”
“Aye,” Carson replied, “I believe she did.”
John nodded. He was so tired and whatever Carson had given him for the pain was settling in nicely.
“I can’t believe you didn’t tell us he was awake!”
“Rodney, he was only awake for a few minutes and I gave him pain meds so he’s out again.”
John smiled as he drifted off to sleep. That’s the way things ought to be.
