The Tower- A Review- Spoilers

The Tower
Or as I like to call it An Atlantis Earthling in The Lord Protector’s Court.

The good news about this episode was that it wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected it to be. The bad news was- it was still pretty bad.

Let’s start with the not nearly as bad first. I have to say I am loving the team dynamics that are slowly developing between John, Teyla, McKay and Ronon. They are getting really good at reading each others expressions, anticipating what the other will do or think and are backing each other up without a second thought. That is cool.

I loved that more and more Teyla seems to finish John’s sentences for him and vice versa *and*, she goes into panic mode more and more if she thinks he is in danger. These kids are in such denial- but they just can’t help those little expressions from slipping out when they least expect it!

Rodney paired with the not so bright but inquisitive native is always amusing, but I have to think that it might have even been funnier had Teyla or Ronon been assigned to go with him. Especially Ronon, those two just get on each other’s nerves and it’s very funny to watch.

Loved, loved, loved Ronon the avenger of threatened women and children- he can be my hero any day! What is it about that Alpha Male that just getting my blood pumping? *growwwwllll*

Last of the not so bad stuff would be the idea that there is at least one possibly more cities in Pegasus just like Atlantis. In fact I would classify that as highly cool. More jumpers, more drones…… you gotta love it, especially at the rate our expedition totals jumpers. Reminds me of Chakotay and the never ending supply of shuttles - ops sorry, wrong show.

Oh and one more thing I almost forgot. I hate to say it, but I did appreciate the very minimal role Weir played in The Tower. No standing around looking stupid, no awkward moments after saying the wrong thing. No decisions that get people killed. It was good. What she did do was necessary and served an actual function- that is a Weir I can stand behind and maybe even like!

So now, on to the bad…… And I think you all know the saying. When she was good she was very very good, but when she was bad…. Yeah….

Court intrigue. Not a good story line choice for Atlantis. Not really a good choice for anyone - outside of Shakespeare, as he was the only one who could write it with any finesse.

The costumes were cheesy, the redressed City set, laughable and John as the main course for musical beds? No. No and just no!

Do I speak for most everyone one when I say that the attempt to pay homage to the late great Captain Kirk has gone from mildly annoying to just plain stupid? Honestly! I felt embarrassed for Joe Flanagan whose character was made to look like a very foolish caricature of himself when like some mindless frat boy from Animal House he jumped into the sack with some girl he’s only just met. I even had to slap myself when I starting thinking I’d rather be watching him make out with Chaya than this silly twit. *shivers* Not a good thing at all!

Lastly, and probably of greater concern to me than even the above, is the plot hole of enormous proportions that was uncovered in this episode. There is now a city with the same Star Drive capabilities as Atlantis which is completely unprotected from the Wraith. How are we not supposed to think that this is HUGE?

An entire five episode arch was devoted to keeping this very technology out of the hands of the Wraith last season and now without a second thought or moments discussion they are leaving it to chance? Very very sloppy.

Now I supposed you could make the argument that their ZPM would have given out in time and the same situation would exist, but honestly, does John Sheppard always have to speed up disastrous events?

At the very least, Rodney and Zelenka should be sent back to power the chair with some recharged jumpers, but in all reality, the city with it’s drive should be destroyed or it doesn’t really matter that Atlantis itself is thought lost to the Wraith. All they have to do is dig up this one and they’ve got a one way ticket to dinner.

While it’s nice that John and company are helping to spread democracy throughout Pegasus, I have to wonder at the writers choices for story lines. Do they really think it’s wise to waste even one episode on the kind of silliness and ill planned plot lines that was The Tower? I guess they must, because this isn’t the first time this season they’ve done it.

Thankfully, I’m told the remaining five episodes are strong, exciting, well written eps which is a darn good thing, because if I had to watch another episode like this one, I might have to rethink my Friday night viewing habits.

Next week- Breaking Up is Hard to Do- or The Long Goodbye. A shipper-pa-looza not witnessed since Conversion! Too bad for a certain sector of this fandom, it wasn’t the ship they expected! ;-P
