Okay, first step into Atlantis fic. And I figure no better way than with ShepFord.

Title:Battles
Pairing:Sheppard/Ford
Rating:PG-13
Summary:John makes the tough decisions.

The Wrait battle was now.

It's day was long since coming. John Sheppard had been preparing for it longer than he cared to remember.

Everything had been straight and precise. He was not a man who believed in distractions.

That was until Lt. Aiden Ford had come along and changed everything about the way he worked. When they had finally stopped dancing around the subject of what they were to eachother things changed.

When in battle John kept one eye on the enemy and the other on Aiden. He couldn't focus and that had scared him,and more importantly Aiden.

He told John they had to stop, the risk was too much for either man to handle. He couldn't live with himself if something bad happened to John because of him.

John argued and convinced Aiden it would change. That he would seperate what they had, from what they had to too.

John had knew he was lying from the first time he spoke those words. The simple truth was Aiden Ford had infused himself into every part of his life. Being objective was an impossible task.

That was what brought them here,to this argument. This would be the biggest fight of John Sheppard's career,of his life. Under no circumstance could Lt. Aiden Ford be on that field.

He knew by the end many of his men would be dead. Many more would wish for it. This would be nothing less than a blood bath and Aiden Ford would be the man front and center. Never backing down until their was nothing left of him to fight.

The thought alone made John's heart tighten to an almost unbearable degree.

"I'm going to need you to stay here Lt. Ford" John had told him giving a subtle, but clear reminder that he was C.O. Aiden had looked at him with a mixture of shock and suspicion.

He was already geared up,he could see Teyla preparing herself at the end of the hall.

"Excuse me sir?" Aiden asked, his voice a cold chill down John's spine. "In case something goes wrong,I'm going to need you to mount the next wave of assault" John told him.

He could imagine the debate inside his lover's head. Was John being honest,or simply refusing to let Aiden do his job.

In the end John would know it was his eyes that gave him away. No matter how strong his voice and body, his eyes gave away his desperation.

"I told you I didn't want this" Aiden said stepping alittle closer to John. "You promised things wouldn't change" and he could hear the hurt behind Aiden's words and it stung.

"I can't focus out there if I'm looking out for you" John said looking down slightly at Aidan.

"I don't need you looking out for me" he told John and walked past him.

John had managed to cut him off before he got too far away.

"Why are you making this so fucking difficult?"

"Because I have a job to do,and so do you" Aiden sneered and John knew this would be a hopeless cause. He loved and hated the man for his nature to never back down.

"Just....be careful" John told him and he could see Aiden visably relax.

"You know I will"

John and Aiden had started walking towards Teyla when John abrubtly stopped. "What's the matter?" Aiden asked him,his concern comforting to John.

"My supply bag,I left in in my room, would you mind?" John asked him and saw Aiden grin.

"You know nobody can get in or out that room except for you" he said to John. The man had been deadly serious about his privacy. He wanted to keep some things just for himself.

Aiden had called him paranoid,John just thought he was cautious.

"It's fine,I have to go over afew things with Teyla" John told him and without a second guess Aiden ran back towards John's room.

Aiden had made it to the room and was surprised when it opened as easy as the breeze. It had taken him a minute to find what he was looking for. His anxiousness of what was to come made him alittle forgetful.

He had found the bag and was about to head out when he saw John standing at the door.

"John?" he asked, his stomach caved in on itself as he realized what was happening.

"I'm sorry" John said and that's when Aiden ran. Just afew steps and he would make it out.

The door had closed in on him a second before he could reach it. Their would be no escape,no battles except the one that was going on inside his mind.

Elizabeth Weir was with McKay and wouldn't find any need to be anywhere near John Sheppard's room. Everyone else would never dare disobey John's orders of leaving Ford in here.

With no other choice Lt. Aiden Ford sat down on John's bed and waited.

Teyla had saw John come stand beside her and she asked where Ford was. She knew he would want to be no other place except by John Sheppard's side.

"He's not here"

That had been all that Teyla needed. She knew this was something she was not going to understand.

As John made his way he heard the sounds of war. He saw the carnage it created and he gave a silent prayer.

"Please forgive me"

the end
