Dance, Annie, Dance
She’s a dancer.
When she was little, she took ballet classes; she made it all the way to level 9, and she danced pointe.
She dances, and gone are the tutus, the pink shoes with the toe box and the satin ribbons. Now she sees her audience through the haze of the smoky air, the longing gazes, some lecherous, but most of them admire her. She sees dreams in their eyes.
She dances. The beat of the music gets into her blood, her bones. There are no choreographers anymore to tell her what to do, no endless repetitions by the accompanist in the corner.
She dances, and she is the star. Sometimes she tries to tell herself it’s just for little Matt, but she knows it’s not true. She’s given birth, and still her body is gorgeous. She’s kept in shape; she takes good care of herself. She loves her job.
She dances. She adores the feel of the polished chrome pole against the palms of her hands, between her breasts, along her backside.
She dances, and sometimes there’s a young man in the crowd, and she remembers her first love, and she wonders briefly what happened to him. It doesn’t matter. She has Matthew now, and she loves him more than life itself.
She dances, her body swaying to the music, the colored lights caressing her skin, the glitter she applies before each show. She sparkles like a galaxy in the night, and she feels profoundly alive.
She dances, and she loves life.
