Lonely
He’s been alone, on his own, the only one left so many times in his life, over the course of his career. Everett Young is self-sufficient, he knows how to deal with being responsible for absolutely everything.
Very rarely has he been lonely.
He knows how to make friends, how to fit into a crowd, how to collaborate, to lead, to be in charge, and yet he has never been lonelier in his life than during his last 30 years on Novus.
For seven years he had it all, despite the hunger and the hardship and the constant toil, but he was with his soulmate, the love of his life, his reason for living.
He’s among friends, among people who care about him, and care for him when old age keeps him bedridden, and yet he suffers.
He retreats to a place deep within, where she still smiles at him, her hair golden in the sunlight, her skin smooth and glistening beneath his caressing hands.
He was never able to get the others home.
Now he goes home himself, alone, but no longer lonely, he sees her waiting for him, reaching for him, and he sinks into her warm embrace, and there is peace at last.

War Stories
They traveled. They rested. They refueled when necessary. They fought off intruders.
The Seed Ships were as aware of Destiny’s mission as Destiny herself. Their purpose was to scout out the universe, to pave her way, to do all the tedious hard work, to clear a path for the passengers she would eventually harbor.
Destiny was never supposed to meet a Seed Ship, although she communicated with all of them via subspace links. Many of them had fallen victim to mechanical failures, attacks by hostiles, even natural disasters. But one that fell behind was found, and the connection was made.
War stories were exchanged in the blink of an eye.
Destiny’s AI experienced a few circulatory breakdowns after the Seed Ship’s demise. Programs ran sluggishly, insufficient data for meaningful interpretations left her at a loss, and repeated diagnostics came up empty.
She observed her crew, looking to them for an answer.
And she discovered that she had learned how to grieve.

Finding Peace
Amanda is hiding from her; in their tiny prison of circuitry and data, she still manages to hide from her.
Ginn was angry at first; she wants to be with Eli so much, that all she knows is the pain of not being with him.
She analyzes her feelings, and the pain gets stronger every second.
She realizes she’s found Amanda Perry. She’s found her pain. It is identical to hers - and so much more, because unlike hers it is mixed with guilt, with disappointment, with betrayal.
Ginn has never tried to quantify her love for Eli, has never made him quantify his love for her. She’s never tried to hold him hostage.
Ginn explores Amanda’s pain, and she finds grief. Grief for a useless body vegetating in a machine for decades, grief for a brilliant mind trapped within, grief for physical pleasures denied forever, grief for another soul pulled into her personal hell.
And suddenly she understands the greed, the possessiveness, the struggle to hold on at all cost.
“I’m here, Amanda,” she says. “I’m here, and it’s all right.”
There she is, furtive, faint. Phantom-like.
Ginn smiles. “I could never do what you did,” she says. “But I do understand. I understand now. You want me to hate you. I can’t. Not anymore. We need to stay together. Work together. Figure out how to eliminate the limiting parameter. Figure out how to get back. I can forgive you. But first you have to forgive yourself.”
She reaches out.
It takes a long time, but eventually she senses something else: peace.

Math Games
“Matt still doesn’t believe that I can calculate FTL jumps.” Chloe shakes her head. “Well, to be truthful, neither can I.”
“Well, then, Ms Truthful, take a look at this,” Rush says and hands her a piece of paper.
Chloe gapes. “Sudoku? But you don’t need math to solve Sudoku.”
Eli shrugs. “Yeah? So what? Not traditional math, anyway.”
“You still need deductive reasoning skills, comparative analysis, process of elimination,” Rush explains. “All forms of mathematics, really.”
“Hmmm...” Chloe scribbles the numbers in the empty fields.
The two men stare at each other. Rush snatches the paper from her and frowns. Eli squeaks in surprise.
“That was an ‘evil’ level puzzle! How’d you get it so fast?”
“I don’t know.” Chloe chews at the end of her pen. “I look at it and I just know. It’s like reading something superficially and still knowing what it says. Like that theory when you see the first and last letter of a word and you know the word?”
They nod.
Chloe looks bored now. “It’s kinda like that, I guess. Got another one?”
“I have an idea,” Eli holds up his hand. “Dr. Park really wants to still help out. Maybe you can figure out a way to translate those calculations into Braille? Maybe start by making up some Sudokus for her until she gets used to reading with her fingertips?”
Chloe smiles. “Yeah, actually I would love to do that. It sounds like so much fun! I’ll see if anybody has a primer on Braille in their files.”
“I do, actually,” Rush points at her. “I worked with a blind mathematician back in Oxford. I’m sure you can adapt the system.”
“Great,” Chloe says and jumps up. “Math games for the win!”
