I had the most pleasant ferry ride back to the island today.
Well, that's not true. At all. I arrived at the terminal at 7:12pm and the 8pm was full so I had to sit there until the 9 came in, which was late, so we didn't leave until 9:30 or so.
Which is why I can hardly be blamed for what happened.
I was already so, so tired from sitting in the sun at folk fest for the afternoon, so it is natural that I would feel tired after sitting in my car for hours getting to/waiting for the ferry.
And I have always said that I am a deep sleeper.
So I am on the ferry, it departs late, whatever. I have some ice cream, I wander a bit, decide that I'm tired of the people and the seats so I go back down to my car. And, well, I bought this incredibly soft wool blanket from the fest, which incidentally makes a heavenly pillow when one reclines one's seat in one's cavalier and decides to shut one's eyes. This was at about 10.
The next thing that happened, after shutting my eyes, was somebody in an orange vest with an eastern European accent is knocking on my window. I'm really confused here. I roll it down and I have no idea what words (or versions thereof) came out of my mouth in my half-awake stupor. He says "everybody is gone, you gotta go!" And that's when I realize what looks so funny about this picture; I'm looking at the man. But only when he says "you gotta go" do I realize there are no other cars around.
Apparently I slept through (1) the announcements, (2) the docking, (3) the cars starting up, and (4) the inevitable honking of the single car that was behind me through all of this (lucky I was close to the back of the line in this case).
It was very surreal, I was like "oh Jesus, okay", put my keys in the ignition, and he says "you wanna put your seat up" (because it is still reclined from when I was sleeping soundly. So I do. And I drive off. The only car left on deck 2. Yeeeeeeeeeeep.
The nice thing about this whole experience was that I was not really embarrassed about it, I just...fell asleep. And to be fair, my natural choice-bed time is around 10, so it's pretty normal that my body figured I was going to bed for the rest of the night at that point. It also made the trip go by just like that. And ALSO, I was so loopy and weirded out by the whole thing that I was not stressed about driving at all, and just sort of sang along to some CDs the whole time.
To make up for my sleeping through the docking and unloading of the ferry, I remembered to buy milk on the way back to my apartment.
