Alternate Universe
Other than Japanese, the workers at the restaurant are Nepalese, Tibetan, Mexican, and Chinese. They all know select phrases in Japanese and some are even fluent (some of the Chinese workers and one Mexican worker, almost). It's really cool hearing these other workers (all of whom came from these different countries and whose native language isn't English) speaking Japanese. It was sooo cute when this one Mexican worker yelled "chotto matte!" ("wait a minute!") to the kitchen people downstairs.
Also, one phrase that a lot of people at work seem to know is "sasuga" (means something like "wow, good job knowing/doing that.") It's so funny because out of nowhere I'll hear "sasuga" (said with emphasis on the "sa" so it's like "sa-suga") and sometimes it'll be really out of context.
And because everyone's native language isn't English, sometimes I'll mis-hear (misshear?) what they say. This one guy was telling me his name and it sounded like "Monkey." But he was actually saying "Michael" haha.
At work, I'm learning bits of Nepali, Tibetan, Chinese, and Spanish (practicing more like). So, adding to select phrases I know in Korean, Hindi, Thai, German (doesn't really count), Russian (doesn't really count either), French (nor this), and Ethiopian, that's 11 languages in which I can say a few phrases! (13 if I count Japanese and English haha.) So cool...
