she's come undone ;

Name: Rachel
Age: 16
FANDOM: Animorphs
Timeline: Post-series

Abilities: Rachel has the ability to morph. To do so, she must first “acquire” the DNA of the animal she wants to morph. This is done by coming into physical contact with the animal and concentrating. Once she has acquired the animal, she can morph it whenever she chooses. Morphing is often a disgusting process to observe, as the change between human and animal follows no logical pattern. Once in a morph, Rachel has all the instincts of the animal, and it is often hard to control them the first time in a morph. One important aspect of morphing is that, if wounded in a morph, she can morph back out of it and the wound will be healed. It is only possible to stay in a morph for two hours at a time. After that point, the person is stuck in the morph permanently. Morphing also requires energy, and completing several morphs in a row can be very draining.

Background: Rachel’s childhood was relatively normal. Her parents were divorced, so she lived with her mother and her two younger sisters. She went to school, hung out with her cousin Jake at family events, made fun of her best friend Cassie’s lack of fashion sense, and practiced gymnastics, though she was too tall to go professionally. That was until that night when everything changed. Rachel, Cassie, Jake, Marco-Jake’s best friend-and Tobias-a loner from school happened to meet, and decided to walk back through the abandoned construction site in town. In doing so, they managed to witness an alien ship’s crash landing. The ship belonged to War Prince Elfangor, a dying member of the Andalite race. He informed them that a silent alien invasion was occurring on their planet. Yeerks, a parasitic alien species, were slowly infesting humans. He then offered them a way to fight back-the power to morph, to change into any animal they could touch. Shocked and running out of time, they accepted his offer. Then they fled, and watched as Elfangor was killed by Visser Three, leader of the Yeerk invasion on Earth.

The five, reluctantly in most cases, formed the Animorphs, and slowly began attacking the Yeerk forces. At the first battle, Tobias demonstrated with shocking clarity that the Andalite’s gift was both a blessing and a curse. It is only possible to stay in a morph for two hours, after that point, one is stuck permanently. Tobias became trapped in the form of a red-tailed hawk. Jake and Rachel both fed him until he learned to hunt, and somewhere in among those visits through her bedroom window, Rachel and Tobias grew close.

Not too long after the first battle, Rachel and the other Animorphs rescued Elfangor’s younger brother, Aximili, or Ax, from the bottom of the ocean. He became the sixth member of the Animorphs, and provided a very helpful insight into Andalite culture.

And so the war progressed. What began as a short period of skirmishes, only holding out until the Andalite fleet arrived, slowly became a drawn-out, desperate war, when it became clear that the Andalites were not coming, at least not soon. Gradually, the war took up a bigger and bigger part of their lives, since it was clear that it was very, very important that they keep the Yeerks at bay.

Three years and far too many battles after that first one, the Andalite fleet arrived at Earth, and all-out war commenced. Unfortunately, the Andalites were not there to help the humans. Rather, they wanted to eradicate the Yeerks, and if that meant destroying the humans, too, so be it. Faced with this, Jake devised a desperate plan to save Earth-from the Yeerks and the Andalites. The plan also involved his cousin’s death. Rachel understood, and willingly participated, since she knew there was no other option.

Personality: At first glance, Rachel seems like your basic airheaded mall rat. This couldn’t be further from the truth. She likes shopping, yes, but for her there is a kind of wild intensity about the act. This is probably all Rachel would have been, had it not been for the war with the Yeerks. The war brought out a darker side of Rachel. She enjoyed the battle. She got a rush from it that she had never found anywhere else. She isn’t very good at the planning, but she’s good with the actual fight. Rachel can be ruthless when she needs to, and has a keen mind. She can understand why something needs to be done, even-as it turned out-if that something happens to be her own death.

But Rachel isn’t just a dark warrior princess. She is fierce in other ways, too. Those whom she loves, she loves deeply, and will fight to protect. She is certainly not devoid of feeling, and wrestles with the moral implications of her actions when they arise. She’s not perfect, but she wants to do the right thing. The problem is that her judgment can be clouded by those who promise the outcome she seeks, even if the means is the wrong one. In the end, what Rachel is is a slightly sarcastic teenager, old beyond her years, who wants peace and excels at the battle to gain it.

World: Rachel comes from, essentially, our modern day world. Actually, it's the late nineties, but it's pretty close. The one difference? Earth is being invaded by parasitic aliens and she's one of the few holding that invasion at bay.
