[Background]
Sunny is the daughter of Olga Gurlukovich, who died during the Big Shell Incident. Shortly after being born, Sunny was taken from Olga by the Patriots, and they threatened to kill her in order to control Olga.

Sunny was being held in Area 51, where the Patriots taught her to work with computers. She became a child prodigy. At the beginning of each mission in Metal Gear Solid 4, she shows that she has memorized the digits of Pi, the Fibonacci Sequence, and the periodic table, and she sometimes sings songs about them.

Eventually, she was rescued by Raiden. He handed her over to Snake and Otacon. They took over with raising her, and they kept her aboard the Nomad, a large plane that was equipped with living necessities, as well as several computers. Sunny took to the computer instantly. She was trying to find out as much as she could about the world outside of the Nomad, and about her parents. Otacon once said, for her, the net is home. As much as she tries to search outside of the Nomad through the net, she also never expressed any desire to leave the Nomad either. Eventually, she does find out at least a little bit about her mother, because she keeps a photo of Olga in the kitchen.

As a side effect, her connection to the net has caused her to have problems with speaking. She has a very pronounced stutter, but over the course of the final game, she becomes a lot better at speaking. However, she also is an amazing programmer, and as such, she helped Otacon to create the Metal Gear MK. II, a miniature Metal Gear that holds ammo for snake, and acts as a communication device while he’s on missions. This was later modified, and they built the new MK. III. She also snagged the designs for Snake’s OctoCamo suit off of the net from DARPA.

Sunny loves to cook eggs, but she’s not good at it at all. She calls it her Sunny-side-up fortune telling. If the eggs end up being good, something good is bound to happen. She cooks eggs so often that Otacon kept chickens on the Nomad for her. The chicken’s names were Solid, Liquid, and Solidus. Also, she’s still too short to reach the stove, so she stands on a box when she had to cook. She gets really offended if either Snake or Otacon refuses to eat her eggs, or if they insult them. She also hates that Snake smokes, and constantly reminds him that the Nomad is supposed to be a non-smoking aircraft.

When Campbell finally comes to Snake to ask him to stop Liquid Ocelot’s insurrection, they didn’t really prevent Sunny from hearing their whole mission briefing, though Otacon did keep her out of the room. But, there’s no door to Sunny’s room, so she could easily hear.

Snake eventually left on the mission, and Sunny made sure to provide backup by researching some of the people that Snake met, especially Drebin. When he finally found him, Liquid Ocelot messed with the SOP (Sons of the Patriots) system, which caused the nanomachines in Snake’s body, as well as all of the other soldiers in the facility’s nanomachines, to suddenly go haywire. Thankfully, he was saved, and brought back to the Nomad by the Rat Patrol Team 01, lead my Meryl. He still got to find out that Naomi was by Liquid Ocelot’s side. Back on the Nomad, Sunny and Otacon were both really worried for Snake, but Snake refused the eggs Sunny made for him.

Naomi had somehow managed to send a video to the Nomad, and she was apparently being forced to work for Liquid Ocelot so that he could find a way to control the nanomachines, and thus control the SOP system. She also sent an encrypted map, in a Soliton Radar format. Sunny is the one who decoded the data, in spite of having no clue how Soliton Radar works. When she decoded the data, she gained a bit of respect for Naomi even before meeting her.

Sunny waited on the Nomad with Otacon as usual, but Otacon eventually went out in the helicopter they kept onboard. When he came back, he didn’t just bring back Snake and Naomi. He also brought back a horribly injured Raiden. Sunny was very protective of him, and extremely worried.

While this was happening, and Naomi was still on the Nomad, she forms a connection with Sunny by giving her hints on the proper way to cook eggs, and also by proving that she knows the rest of the periodic table after she heard sunny singing about the elements. Naomi gives her a blue rose that was in the pocket of her shirt, and notices the picture of Olga by Sunny’s stove.

Sunny ends up searching up information about Raiden through the net so that they can find a way to save him, and she ended up hacking the information from AT Security, the Patriots. Through this, Naomi showed her that Raiden’s blood needed to be dialyzed in order for them to save his life, and they could only find the equipment to perform the procedure from Dr. Madnar, the scientist who turned him into a cyborg in the first place. Sunny immediately went back to her computer to look for more information.

Later, Sunny fell asleep at the computer while searching up information about her mother.

Apparently, Sunny went with Naomi to retrieve the equipment for Raiden’s dialysis, and they brought it back to the Nomad. Naomi disappeared shortly after, but Sunny took over Raiden’s treatment for her anyway. Before she left, she entrusted Sunny with a plan that she had originally been planning to leave in Otacon’s hands.

She’s still taking care of him when Snake returns to the Nomad, with half of his face burned up, after meeting with Big Mama. She also seems to really want to help Snake, but when he starts to suggest that Raiden go with him on his mission to kill Liquid, Sunny immediately turns to protecting him from Snake, insisting that he needs to rest. Truthfully, she was right, but Raiden didn’t seem to want to believe that. He tries to get up to go with Snake, but only ends up showing that he’s way too weak to leave, and this also probably is the first time that Sunny was able to hear just how emotionally damaged Raiden had become. He ended up on the floor, and Snake helped her hook him back up to the dialysis machine.

Eventually, after Snake had returned to his mission, Sunny gave Raiden the go ahead so that he could return to the field. She couldn’t have done this very willingly. She definitely wouldn’t want him to go out into danger, but she seems to understand that Raiden and Snake had to go, no matter what she wanted. However, before Raiden left, Sunny asked her to give Naomi a message. That she had finally cooked sunny side up eggs properly.

Liquid’s plan was to use the genetic code from Big Boss in order to control the Patriot’s AI network. By doing this, he took over the SOP system. Every gun in the world was disabled. He wanted to launch a nuclear warhead at the core of the Patriot’s AI network, JD, in space. He wanted to destroy JD, because another proxy AI, GW, would take over as the core AI. Liquid had made sure that GW was housed in Outer Haven. Liquid would have complete control over the system. Also, the Patriots would have eventually injected the nanomachines into the entire population, and not just soldiers, to exact total control. In order to completely ruin the Patriots, as well as stop Liquid, the AIs had to be destroyed.

Naomi knew all of this, and so, she passed on a flash drive to Sunny while she was on the Nomad. This flash drive included all of the information she had on Outer Haven, as well as the incomplete program data for a computer virus. Sunny took the program and worked Emma’s old virus’s code into Naomi’s code. This created a worm that would cause the AI’s programs to attack itself. Not only did she do that, but she also found a way to make sure that the AIs ability to continue providing the world with water, food, and transportation were left intact. This virus was called FOXALIVE. Now they just had to get the virus into the system.

Snake managed to get the virus to GW, as well as defeat Liquid Ocelot. The Patriots were subdued, without ruining the world. Otacon pondered if Sunny’s creation of the virus was her own way of avenging her mother.

Sunny later attends the wedding of Meryl, and Akiba with Otacon, but Snake was gone. For the first time, Sunny really gets to be outside, and she even makes her first friend, in spite of the fact that she couldn’t speak his language. She wanted to give the MK III to him to him as a present. She adored being outside, and loved looking towards the sun. Otacon tells her that she can finally live in the outside world. She did admit to liking the outside world, but she then began to wonder about Snake. Otacon told her that Snake was sick, and he went away for a while, and that he needed time to rest. Sunny notices that Otacon’s choking up, and she asks him if he’s crying. He denies it, but ends up putting his glasses on the wrong way, and making her laugh. She clings to his arm, and they watch the sun set together.

In truth, Otacon knew that Snake was planning to commit suicide, but he was thwarted at the last second by a surprise meeting. Only a short while later, Snake returned home, so that he could live out the rest of his life, without having to work as a soldier. Otacon wanted to watch Snake in his final days, in order to be able to tell his story, and as a witness to the passing of his legacy. Of course, because Sunny was going to remain with Otacon, she lived with them as well. The final scene of the game is of Sunny calling for Snake and Otacon to come eat her eggs, which she finally prepared properly. Her “Sunny-side up fortune telling” was finally predicting some happy times ahead.

[Personality]
While a somewhat shy and un-confident girl, Sunny is very sweet, and she’s always looking out for the wellbeing of those around her. This especially applies to Snake and Otacon, who took care of her for so long, but it also applies heavily to Raiden as well. While she probably wouldn’t feel as much of a personal connection while helping other people, I’m sure she would do it anyway. She does everything in her power to support them, which actually turned out to be a vital help to Snake and the others.

Sometimes she disagrees with the decisions her caretakers make, and if she does, she isn’t afraid to voice it, though for the longest time those protests were weakened by her stutter. As she interacted with everyone more, she began stuttering less, and by the end of the game, the stutter is much less pronounced. However, it is still there, a little. It mostly is noticeable when she tries to pronounce the letter “s”.

Even though she’s a child, Sunny is amazingly mature for her age, understanding that the world doesn’t revolve around her, and that it can be horribly cruel at times. It’s very clear just how mature she is by the fact that she is really emotionally resilient. She took care of Raiden without being traumatized even though she’s only seven. Even in tense situations, she can keep her composure. She also was able to handle the fact that she could not live outside of a small plane, instead of outside. Something to note is that she never cries, even once, which is highly uncommon for characters her age.

Part of her maturity definitely comes from her vast intellect. She is a genius who sometimes even surpasses Otacon’s skills in programming, and it reflects on how she handles difficult situations. Many times during the game, when everyone was faced with problems, such as how to save Raiden, Sunny immediately went into the net to hack the information from any source she could find. Absorbing information comes easily to her, and she also can adapt many problems with the knowledge she already has in order to find unique solutions for them, such as when she completed Naomi’s program by using parts of Emma’s program.

However, in the end, no matter how mature she is, she is still a child. Even though she has Otacon and Snake to keep her company on the Nomad, she still desperately searches for any information she can find on the mother she never knew. It’s clear that she really wants her mother, which is probably part of the reason why she became so close to Naomi when she had treated Sunny as if she were her daughter. She desires attention, especially if she finds that she has been ignored, even when Snake and Otacon are discussing something important. However, the reason for her interruptions also may have been that she really honestly wanted to finally make eggs that her guardians would actually like. It’s also shown that she likes to play video games as well, because she appears to have a PSP and a PS3 in her room on the upper floor of the Nomad.

[Specialties/Abilities] Any powers or special talents they may have :O
When the Patriots kidnapped Sunny, she was trained so that she could work with computers. This involved an intensive education, giving her enough intelligence to be considered a prodigy. She is not only skilled with programming and hacking, but she also helped to build the MK. II, which implies that she’s picked up some engineering skills as well. She also has an amazing memory, and she uses songs to help her remember things. Her memory is so good that she memorized all of the stops along a private Japanese railway, even though she could never have been on their train before.

[Affection] Well, since she’s a child, I highly doubt she’s going to ever fall in love with anyone, but she has a lot of familial love to share. However, it’s a matter of breaking through her shell. She is very shy, and it’s hard to get close to her. Still, when you do get close, she can be pretty affectionate, and she really will be actively seeking friends now that she’s going to get to live outside!

[Fighting] No way. She’s not a fighter. She’s better suited to backup.

[Other Facts] If you get close to her, beware, you WILL try her eggs some day.
