“What happened to us Hyukjae?” Hyoyeon whispered. They were side by side leaning against the wall of a secluded hallway. Hyukjae had his head bowed down. “I don’t know.” He whispered back. He honestly doesn’t know. Hyoyeon wrapped her arms around herself. She felt empty. Hyukjae wanted to reach out to her but stopped midway. He couldn’t.
They were the best of friends. Inseparable. He was her closest Oppa, and he knew everything about her. In return, she understood him--- his thoughts and his gestures. They never really got the chance to confess to each other, because for them their friendship was too important to just go to waste.
He loved her and she loved him. But what really happened between the two of them?
He debuted and his fame reached to its peak, girls all over the world fell for his charismatic dancing and dorky attitude. He dated famous idols too. But never did he forget about her, not really. But in a nutshell... they just kind of fell apart.
Hyoyeon would watch him on television with an aching heart. He didn’t even call her when he found out that he’d be debuting! That was enough for Hyoyeon to forget about him and the special something that they shared.
And then she also debuted. That was when they fell completely apart. Hyukjae wanted to talk to her so badly, but he couldn’t. He wanted to apologize to her for being such a jerk. Fame really got to his head. He knew he was in the wrong this time.
Hyoyeon sighed. “What did I do Oppa?” Questions swarmed her brain but this was a good start.
“Nothing.” He answered bleakly. Hyoyeon’s blood boiled, if she wasn’t getting any decent answer from him she’d better just leave. Hyukjae grabbed her hand, stopping her.
“What?” she almost shouted. Her nostrils were flaring and her hands balled into fists from years and years of bottling up her rage and despair.
“I’m sorry.” Hyukjae uttered. He knew it was too late but somehow those were the words that came out from his mouth. “Sorry for what?” she scoffed.
“Sorry for breaking my heart? Sorry for making me cry myself to sleep every night for the past three years?” she said angrily. “It’s too late Hyukjae.” She finished as she felt a tear escape from her eye.
“I know.” He said. He felt hot liquid flow freely from his own eyes. For a moment they just stood there. Letting go of all the harsh memories that they have gone through. Hyukjae knew he wasn’t forgiven.
Hyoyeon’s phone rang as ‘Run Devil Run’ echoed through the halls. She fished out her iphone from her jean pocket and stared at the caller’s name. Hyukjae took a peek and he felt his heart sink.
It read, “Doojoon Oppa <3”.
Hyoyeon wiped her teary eye and cleared her throat. She feigned a smile as she answered the call but it looked more like a grimace. Hyukjae winced.
“Yobosaeyo... Oppa?” she tried her best to sound cheerful. Hyukjae pinched the bridge of his nose, trying his best to not snatch the phone from her and throw it aside.
“Ne Oppa, I’ll see you in an hour. Ne… ne… okay bye Oppa. Uh… Love you.” He heard her say.
“I have to go.” She told him. He didn’t respond and Hyoyeon took it as her cue to leave. Hyukjae watched her go. He stared at her retreating figure and his heart broke into pieces.
He couldn’t do anything now; but to just stare at her and think of what would have been of HyoHyuk if he hadn’t messed up.
Hyoyeon left to meet her new-found love, but she didn’t know that she took Hyukjae’s heart with her in the process too.
