my sister, a friend, and i all agree that dr winthrop-young is an impossibly sexy bitch. at first i thought it was just the sultry course material of modern german lit combined with his accent and impeccable public speaking skills that was just causing a fog of disembodied sexy to envelop the classroom for three hours every thursday evening. but no. this is all very embodied in the man. the mannerisms, thoughtful pauses, dry wit and corresponding ironical smiles, nice-fitting clothes, etc. here is a man who knows what suits his vibe.
im always infatuated with some prof because i have a nerd fetish but i promise you this is no garden-variety nerd. i havent even read his publications and i think hes hot ok. i dont even know what his research interests are. moreover, the three of us all have extremely different ideas of what is sexy and we are all in awe of winthrop-youngs weapons of mass seduction.
in other news, what is wrong with germans. id like to thank gunther grass for writing 'headbirths' which finally addressed the issue of why germans are quite into regretting they have an apollonian stick up their ass as they write about being on vacation and marvelling at the dionysian passion/depravity of the locals to the point where they too become quite depraved but, oops, too depraved, time to go back to germany. part of headbirths was kind of unreadable - i really dont have time to listen to grass ramble on about how the german obsession with pedagogy has given him radical ideas about education (and this is saying a lot given the frivolity which absorbs so much of my day). still, the book is quite good in that it pokes at this idea quite relentlessly, aided in this self-reflection project by the fact it is written in the first person. anyway. i love thomas mann (lol, fag hag) and im on speaking terms with zweig but love or no love reading headbirths at the same time as amok and death in venice has been helpful.
