"Something has been troubling me," Brennan said, breaking the silence as they returned from the firing range where Booth had just passed his marksmanship exam with flying colors.
Booth 'hmmmd' as he maneuvered the SUV into the left lane, preparing for the turn off to the Jeffersonian.
"Your aim was flawless today. And, your aim was flawless when you saved me from Dr. Leacock." She was careful not to say 'when you killed Dr. Leacock.' She knew how taking another human life, no matter the reason, still affected him. "Why did you think you wouldn't pass your exam when you clearly possessed exemplary marksmanship skills weeks after your surgery?"
Booth stopped the car at the front entrance to the Jeffersonian and shifted in his seat. He was quiet, contemplative, for a few moments. Then he smiled and turned to her. "I don't know Bones. I guess you're my good luck charm."
Brennan rolled her eyes at the thought of anything -- animate or inanimate -- bringing good luck. Rather than explain the scientific impossibilities of this to Booth, she decided, instead, to accept his words at face value.
She opened the door and started to step down but turned at the last moment and placed her hand over Booth's. "Whether it was luck or skill is irrelevant. You were -- you *are* -- amazing. Don't ever doubt that."
She left him staring at her as she walked away. What she hadn't told him was that she was a scientist and that she had already analyzed the data and had come to the conclusion that she was the common element in both instances. She concluded that his aim was flawless when he was protecting her. And that conclusion made her feel deliciously warm all over.
