Heh. How can you not support the idea of everyone getting along? Yes, it is a fantasy- Yes, America is not perfect and has a grandiose amount of its own problems. But no one should not agree to the idea of peace, because without peace there is more war, and I'm sure you would not want to support that.
Sadly, the article should be taken as having a null effect on any decisions that the government has or is going to make in regards to the conflict. The letter written shows the American people that differences need to be set aside in a time of need. America its self is in a time of need based on the problems you listed. We have a strong Right and Left fighting each other everyday in Washington over the issues of the economy, war, social security, education, morals, etc... The religious leaders who signed the letter to the President are inspired by divine powers and were able to agree upon a controversial and on going problem. It would be nice if politicians (and every day citizens) were able to put aside (or cooprrate with) their self-interest inspiration to actually accomplish something. Take the letter as an example of people trying to change what what is hurting humanity... instead of just sitting on LiveJournal.com and complaining.
I do know that the dualism in American politics make the government what it is, but every once in a while its nice to fantasize about it being different and more productive for each of its citizens.
