Buffy/Angel Question

So I wasn't a Buffy or Angel watcher.

I love Bones and David, so I bought season 1 of Angel.

But, do I have to watch Buffy to really get Angel?

Does anyone know how they handle the cross over episodes on the Angel DVDs??

I just want to make sure I do this right.  I really don't want to watch Buffy, but possibly would if it's a must.
