I lay in bed Sunday morning, debating on whether I should drag myself out and walk the two miles to church. Seeing as I won’t be able to go again in several more weeks, I got myself up and found the walk actually very pleasant, doughnut and cappuccino in hand. Since nobody I knew was there yet, I sat down in a different pew than usual and read until an older woman with a cane asked if she could scoot in. We chatted a while, who we were, how long we’d been attending, the weather… I noticed that the people I knew had arrived, but since this woman was sitting all by herself, I decided to keep her company.
Later in the service I noticed that she had her head bowed, and wondered if she was praying or had fallen asleep. When I noticed the drool and snot dripping, I quickly checked to see if she was breathing, and then figured she had dozed off for a bit. I didn’t want to embarrass her by nudging her awake, but after the congregation clapped for a song, and she didn’t wake up, I started patting her arm and calling her name. She still didn’t wake up. A man behind us rushed over and tried doing the same, and soon, there were lots of people. The whole service stopped, and I got out of there so more qualified people could help her. They got her coughing and throwing up after 5 minutes, and soon after the EMTs arrived with a stretcher. The 200 people in the room had been very quiet this whole time, praying for her all the while. As they wheeled her off, once again the congregation clapped, and she waved goodbye to us all good humouredly. The guess is that she had a seizure. Thank God she didn’t have it on her drive to the church, or the way back. If there was anyplace better to have a medical emergency, it would have only been the hospital. It isn’t often that one has 200 people praying around you simultaneously. I think she’s going to be ok :-) Even though I didn’t use my CPR, I’m glad that I just got it renewed, because who knows when something like that is going to happen. It could have just as easily happened somewhere where there weren’t a lot of people.
Faith is coming in a bit, and I’m surprising her with strawberry smoothies. Mmmmmmm. Later this week I have more Howard training, and I’m hoping to catch Megan’s play with Kris and Ryan. Yay!
