I Love My City

It's not every 90 degree day that one decides to bake an apple cake. Oof I am baking myself (not in the 4:20 way thanks).

I'm heading to a cook out on the lake in an hour or so, and the smells of apple are wafting from the oven. Mmmmmm....

This weekend has thusfar been awesome. After a rotten day of subbing for some homicidal 2nd graders (they wre seriously out for blood) I took a cold shower and dressed up to find some jazz with Jill and Sabrina. We found Sabrina's brother and Dave in the street, making our party 5. Not to mention we saw everybody else we know in the throngs of people slowly making their way on Church. It was NUTS! People playing banjos, violins, mandolins, and bongos. Bands attracting people like honey, clotting the street. Babies in stollers, dogs on leashes and happy couples twirling. I kind of felt like a celebrity what with all the kids waving to us and yelling their hellos. Jason Bumpus snuck up behind me and dumped ice cold water on my back (didn't mind it in the least what with the heat). I passed my friend Jon from high school at least 4 times, and we kept shaking our heads at the ridiculousness of it. I saw David B's friend who we went to see Star Wars with. Lots of people from work, including the ESL teachers and Pat. Spotted Nick a couple times, and lost track of all the kids.

I drank an amazing smoothie and the girls ate sandwiches at City Hall Park, watching a large group of teenagers perched in a single tree like monkeys or wild birds. People were doing cartwheels barefoot in the grass, as music swirled from all around.

We went back to the apartment (disapointed that Grace Potter and the Nocturnals were moved to Memorial Auditorium in case of rain, though it was insanely sunny and hot) where we heard a message from Gabe saying to meet him and Jon at Luenigs. He had hung out with us the night before, making REALLY strong white Russians, getting me drunk on the stoop and writing inappropriate magnet poetry. Well, we were all to blame really. :-) So Jill and I ran downtown again, met up with them and Jon's friend from Tyler Place, and we went to Nectars where we got the BEST fries, had a few drinks and listened to Jennifer Hartswick belt out blues and funk with her incredible voice and trumpet. We danced for a bit before saying goodbye to Jon and his friend. We then bought a peanut butter and chocolate crepe and ate it on a rock, watching the night life pass us by.

Came back here and listened to some hip hop, read Dick and Jane, and continued writing very bad poetry before Gabe drove home. I don't think I went to bed until 1:30 (like the nght before).

Today the streets were filled again, the pounding drums and shrill whistles calling everyone within ear shot to follow the parade of belly dancers, dancers with streamers and flowy skirts, and correographed drummers. Everyone was so into it, and I was filled with the idea that I actually live here. I followed them to the park, where the farmers market was in full swing with flowers, goat cheese and art for sale. The fountain is bubbling now, kids are dipping their toes in.

Ah, my cake is ready, but I'll follow up a bit later.

Tonight is the big block party!! Everyone get here now, 'cause you won't want to miss it. :-)
