Exciting weekend with two of my favorite people.
Got to Kris' around 7:00 Friday and we made a yummy dinner of Annies pasta, bread & brie and salad with a great orange poppy seed dressing.
Right before we hopped in the car to go hot tubbing with Jeremy, Dandy decided to attack a pocupine, getting 20 prickles imbedded in his face and chest. Kris had to go to the vet with her mom, so we decided to meet up later.
Jerms and I watched some intense sumo wrestling (live in the kitchen) and a lil Samurai Jack while we waited. When she arrived we hopped into the tub and hung out until we were light headed and woozy.
The next morn we visited Lucas at the white cottage and then bought amazing sandwiches at the Farmer's Market. Mmmmmm.... We ate them at Falkner park, where a small wedding was taking place. It was such a warm, gorgeous sunny day that we decided to hike the AT up to Lucy's lookout.
Well, we got lost for a bit and wandered around some beautiful, rolling hills, disturbed some ducks who waddled off, and saw some amazing views of waving grass and white cotton candy clouds. We went back to the start of the trail an hour and a half later, where a strange old man with long greying dreadlocks showed us the path and disapearded into the woods.
We hiked. And hiked. And hiked. 6.5 miles felt like 10, and we were definitely not too bright about bringing only 1 water bottle. It made me re-evaluate wanting to do a longer trip this summer, but then again, maybe if we were better prepared... Meanwhile there were 12 bottles of water in my car. But we did see some amazing flowers and waterfalls, and I was really glad I brought my camera. I took an entire roll. Although we didn't dare drink the water (it looked so cool and refreshing) we did climb barefoot in it, and dunked our head under the stream.
We finally made it up to the top, and climbed the steep ladder wo the widow's walk on the roof. You could see EVERYTHING from up there, from Killington to New Hampshire. It was fun trying to figure out houses, roads and rivers, but as it was gettting a little cloudy and the wind was picking up, we decided that we better move down quick. It had taken us 3.5 hours to get there afterall. So we decided to take a short cut to Old School house road on Rt. 12, really close to Barnard center, and then hitch a ride to the car.
Yeah. It didn't quite turn out that way. We took a right instead of a left, and sang really loudly to forget the sharp pains in our knees from the jarring steep, downhill hike. Eventually we came out on BRIDGEWATER HOLLOW ROAD! We were COMPLETELY on the other end.
We finally found a rough dirt road, and followed it to a semi sketchy house with Private signs everywhere and a deer skeleton hanging in a tree. Nobody was home, so we traveled until we heard the sound of a generator. An interesting cartoonish looking man with expressive eyebrows named Ollie told us where we were in relation to ROUTE 4, and suggested we head down the hill if we wanted a ride. We walked in brighter spirits, for the sun had come out, the sky was blue, and we were surrounded by a cathedral of leaves, deep ravines, and water falls. We spotted some amazing swimming holes (getting there is the only problem). Eventually we spotted a haphazardly constructed artists studio, with a small pond and three amazing sculptures rising from it. There were a couple houses, one of them really small with a white saab in front.
We were greated by this older man with long white hair in hospital scubs. He let us use his phone and fill our water bottle. He was playing Prarie Home Companion, and had pieces of art stacked everywhere in his tiny house. He introduced himself as Okie, and Jeremy made the connection that the guy knew his mom. Okie called Mrs. Kolb up and razzed her up, saying he was going to tell us stories about her and show us some pictures to boot.He also pulled out all of these maps, and showed us where we started on the trail, where we wanted to go, and which way we had come. He was really nice. It's also kind of crazy, cause apparently he once declared himself legally dead, and kind of didn't exist to the government for a while.
Mr. Kolb met us on the road, and brought us to Jerms.' We drove to my car and headed to Onion Flats where we bought TONS of food before parking at the drive-in for The Pacifier (really not as bad as I thought it would be) and Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. I think I was dehydrated, because it REALLY hurt to eat. We eventually ended up on the ground in back of the car, and all took naps during the second movie.
Jerms stayed here last night, and this morning I got him hooked on ALIAS. We watched 3 episodes! Mwu ha ha ha. I've converted another! And this afternoon has been quiet with the family.
And this weekend BOTH of them are coming up for the jazz festival. Got that Jerms? It'll be lots of dancing in the street! Am excited.
