Article in LA Times today about ranchers making cut backs. Feed is too expensive, so they're bringing in mini Herefords that produce nearly as much meat and milk for much less food. They're about 42" tall and 720 pounds. That doesn't sound small to me, let alone miniature. But size is relative.
The idea of a mini cow was just too cute. I had to look them up and found this disturbing sentence:
We can help you find your Miniature Herefords, whether you're looking for a pet for the back yard, a show animal, or a beef project.
I can just see them as yet another economy indicator - mini cows in the backyard, times are good. Mini cows gone, times are bad. Mini cows barbecued in the backyard, you're probably in Texas, good times or bad.
I'm a proud omnivore, but I don't think I could eat one. Not knowingly. If all the ranches switch I might have to wait for science to invent synthesized protein vats.
