Character Survey Yadda Yadda I SUCCUMB EASILY TO PRESSURE.

Aug 16, 2010 08:43

DEAR GOD THIS IS AWFUL.

Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
He's rather tall (184 cm according to the official guidebooks) and well-built without being muscle-bound: the typical sleek, sharp-dressed man.

2. How old is he?
My headcanon says he's 47-ish and I shall not question my headcanon.

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
You know those people who look like they've swallowed a fork? Shelly's like that. He'd probably be able to carry a good number of books on his head if it wasn't shaped so oddly.

4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
He keeps himself healthy and fit to the best of his ability, although his age is starting to show in various ways. He's entirely conscious of it, too.

5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
On the job? Fluid and relaxed, absolutely (though in a rather calculated manner). On personal situations... his body's as tense as his head.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
Well, uh, I think he's pretty damn good-looking. He sees himself as an average man, really. He might occasionally be a bit self-conscious about his huge scar, though.

7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
His skin is pretty light (which only adds to how creepy he might look). As for scars, he has quite a few of them, the most obvious one being, well, right down the middle of his face. He refuses to wear makeup to hide it.

8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
His hair is fucking weird and yet I'm convinced it's completely natural. He's got very short black hair for the most part and then... WHITE FLUFF IN THE MIDDLE, OUT OF NOWHERE. From behind, it seriously looks like a lab rat climbed on top of his head and died there. Not so much from the front, though. ;;

9. What color are his eyes?
Well... He has them closed every single time we see him in canon. Erm. I imagine they're grey, though, because it fits his personality ahurrrrrr

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Well, there's his sexy manly moustache. And his anachronistic monocle. All in all, he looks a LOT like your typical British stereotype.

11. What are his chief tension centers?
Eyebrows, jaw, back. He particularly fears that his back will act up at the worst possible time some day...

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
Very formal... and typically dark. I say "typically" because sometimes he just needs to put on uniforms and stuff to blend in and, well, he can't be the only bellboy in a hotel dressed in black, can he? :T But yeah, I hope you get my point. It's very unlikely that you'll ever see him in a t-shirt or jeans.

13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
... They fit damn well. I am not the most appropriate person to answer this, I have a fetish for elegant men in suits. ;;

14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
The answer is yes, if only because there barely is a distinction between his job and his free time. Well, with the exception of when he needs to disguise himself, as I said above. But even then, he never seems to take his monocle off. Even his radio has a monocle, Jesus Christ.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
... B-Buh. Uh. I've never thought about it. Please don't make me think about it. It's bad enough when I start to think about his junk unintentionally.

Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Deep, most definitely. And unexpectedly warm, most of the time (if his tone turns cold, you should ideally lose control of your bladder and apologise to him immediately).

2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
... Uh, maybe the warmness fit better here, but it doesn't matter! His tone is low and polite - when he gets louder, well, that usually means he's angry (especially if he starts emphasising random words). You might not like him when he's angry.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
It's... quite amazing, really. Shelly doesn't have a voice in the game, but you can HEAR his Britishness. I know, I know, the UK has lots of accents and I shouldn't be generalising... ;; But seriously, his accent is a classy and clean one.

4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
First and foremost, English (obviously); he's rather decent at French, Italian and German and then he knows some stuff in other major languages, to varying degrees of fluency. Assassins might have to travel around a lot...

5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Hmm, not that I can think of.

6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
Usually... he's decent at improvising. Just decent. You might notice his words are very deliberate sometimes. And, well, he just about freezes up if things get too personal.

7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
He's generally very eloquent. In fact, he seems to find it difficult to not be so. When he tries to tone it down a little, it comes off as notably awkward. In fact, I think one certain quote from the game would work well as an example here (copy and pasted straight from the script because I'm lazy): :T

? ? ?:
Oh, yes, that's right.
Now that I am playing the role
of the kidnapper,

? ? ?:
I can't pass up this chance to
say,

? ? ?:
"And don't even think about
callin' the cops!" ...Hmm, not
great, but you get the idea.

I mean, come on. That's ridiculous, and I like the guy.

Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Book-smart, definitely. Even his knowledge of anatomy and fighting and all that is very clinical.

2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
Just as with his speech, he can improvise decently, but he does feel more comfortable when he can plan ahead.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
He tries to keep a good balance between logic and intuition, but there is barely any idealism in him. He's a practical, rational thinker.

4. What kind of education has the character had?
Shelly was homeschooled, first by his parents and then by Mr. de Killer Senior... if you want to stretch the definition of "homeschooling" a bit. HOMESCHOOLING INVARIABLY RESULTS IN CREEPY MINDSETS WITH SKEWED MORALS, YOU HEARD IT FROM ME FOLKS

5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Murder. Well, to be more precise, he is well-acquainted with the human body. He could probably be a doctor if he wanted to. He's also an efficient fighter, knowledgeable in both armed and hand-to-hand combat, and he's got some rather steady aim. He might know more than a couple of things about infiltration and disabling security systems, as well.

... The reason he keeps asking about Pokémon anatomy? The idea that there are creatures out there he doesn't know how to kill makes him uncomfortable. No, he's not planning to kill any. He just needs to know how.

6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Definitely an introvert. Not only does he hardly reveal anything personal about himself, he can also be shy outside of professional situations. He does well when it's all just business, though.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Shelly's typically calm; he's reasonably happy with his life, though he's also very aware of the dark side of the world (he rarely displays any emotion beyond a sometimes shallow, sometimes almost warm smile, however); and when he has a goal or a duty to perform, he will see it to the end, goddammit. He swears it.

8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
As I said, he usually does well when acting on a purely professional level, barely letting his emotions or any of his thoughts slip through. But... those aren't exactly new situations, are they? When actually socialising, outside of his job, that is, he IS reserved, though in a very different manner. He was pretty bad with it when he was younger, stuttering and struggling to come up with excuses for his actions, and though he HAS gotten much better with age, you might just be able to crack him if you press hard enough.

9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
Both. He does what he must.

10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
See above. He adapts his actions as appropriate to the situation at hand.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Want to scroll back up to the "DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT CALLIN' THE COPS" bit? Yeah, I didn't think so. His sense of humour can be pretty terrible. He has one (a dark one, at that), but he usually takes things very seriously. Jokes involving creative euphemisms and newfangled slang might go completely over his head.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
I HAVE THOUGHT TOO HARD ABOUT THIS. I've determined that he doesn't fit any specific diagnosis, but, heck, there is something not quite right about him. He CAN feel empathy for the people he cares about; it's just that his mindset has been altered to the point where he can murder without hesitation or regret. It's just business.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
Meeting and being taken in by his predecessor was obviously what caused him to become such a... unique individual. And however it was that he got that scar on his face... it taught him a lesson.

14. What does he fear?
Dishonouring his name. It's the only thing he's got, after all.

15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
He just wants to keep on living life as he always has. He's satisfied with his professional life, now he just wants to keep doing his job as well as he can for as long as he can and find a successor to train before his back acts up at the worst possible moment.

16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
He just feels lonely sometimes and wishes he had someone he could speak to. ;o;

Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
His parents were absent. Physically or emotionally, I'm not sure; but in any case, they're most definitely not in contact anymore and haven't been in a long time.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
Not to anyone's knowledge.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
Again, not to anyone's knowledge.

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
Daddy de Killer, of course. He looked after him for years and taught him most of what he knows, so they are very much like father and son.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
He... doesn't really seem to have any. My headcanon says he gets along quite well with one Viola Cadaverini, though. It doesn't seem unlikely than an assassin and a member of the mafia would meet...

6. Does he have other close friends?
Not in canon. Here on R29, he doesn't have any close close friends, but he's fond of Snake, Phoenix, Maya (he mostly wants to make things up to her - their meeting in canon was... less than ideal), Kaitou Kid (I KNOW THEY ONLY SPOKE ONCE BUT SHELLY IS INTERESTED. INTELLECTUALLY) and Kay. S-Sob half of these are castmates I'm sorry Shelly's so asocial ;;

7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
It's not that he has trouble getting along with people, he just has trouble bonding with them. Not getting too attached too people is a habit that's pretty much engraved in his brain.

8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
There's hardly a distinction. Whoever Shelly has decided to be loyal to, he will stick with to the end.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Single and a virgin.

10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
Adrian Viola Dee Oldb Nope.

11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
... I-I honestly don't know. 8D;;

12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
He... doesn't look for anything... although his ideal partner is one he can fully empathise with.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
Nope, and the only child figure he wants in his life right now is a successor.

14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
He probably has tons, being a big-name assassin and all. But there's one particular person in canon that he will go out of his way to punish, should he ever show up here...

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
Realistically? A big fat zero. In my own demented musings with my friends... One and a half.

16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
HAHAHAHAH HE'S A PRUDE. Either he's a virgin or he had exactly one sexual experience once before that went horribly, horribly wrong.

17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
... D-Dude, I dunno. Seriously. He'd totally be a gentleman in bed, though. Not that I've thought about it.

Beliefs
1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
Well, uh, his birth date was a complete asspull. By me. I think I did base it on the Western zodiac, LET ME GO CHECK. Aaaand yep, he seems to fit the... Capricorn type. And... I guess he's kinda like the Pig/Boar too?

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
He never really thinks about that stuff.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
OH BOY. I'll try to keep this as non-boring as possible, but I can't promise anything. Shelly's an "assassin with a conscience", you might say. He has absolutely no problems with killing people (as he puts it, if he did, he wouldn't be very good at his job, would he?), but he has a deeply-rooted code (associated with the de Killer name) that he follows to the letter. ALWAYS. There must be a relationship of mutual and absolute trust between his clients and himself.

As a professional worthy of his name should do, he goes to great lengths to make sure that his clients are never, under any circumstances, implicated for the murders that he commits, going as far as leaving his calling card at the crime scenes he was responsible for, as a way to assure the client that the deed was done and the police that yes, he was the guy who came here and murdered the hell out of this dude, so don't bother looking for anyone to arrest.

... And if you break his trust, well, you'd better get cracking on your list of things you want to do before you die.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
It varies; he can be indifferent, politely curious or, in the case of particularly odd beliefs, think you're a little crazy but say nothing about it.

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
He's a homophobe, for no good reason than his... well, his old-fashionedness. I mean, he doesn't go out of his way to persecute homosexuals, but he thinks they don't make any sense. Yes, it hurts to play someone like this. ;_;

Daily Life
1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
He's pretty comfortable. I imagine he gets some damn good money from his occupation, but he's no big spender; you never know when an emergency might come along.

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
He's... infamous. Edgeworth himself describes Shelly as one of the best at what he does (to the point where there's a whole damn secret team on the police devoted to catching him). Shelly's learned to live with it - he had plenty of time to get used to the general idea, having lived with his predecessor for years.

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
He lives alone in his house, which he makes sure to keep carefully clean. It's a nice place to relax and unwind; heck, even you would probably find it comfortable if it didn't look so... clinical and impersonal.

... He also has a gym stashed away somewhere. True fact.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
... Does ammunition and general maintenance on his weapons count as basic necessities? I'm going to say they do. He buys newspapers too. And books from time to time. :B

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
Well... Hell, we've been over this. He's a professional assassin, and he's one of the best. He's satisfied with his life, too. On R29, he's just a trainer. He doesn't think much of it, as he wants to face his time here as a... vacation. For now, at least.

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
Fffff, he has like... no personal life. He likes reading when he has the time, and he has a soft spot for animals. He also exercises a lot. Gotta keep his body good.

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
EATIN' HEALTHY ALL THE TIME YO. GOTTA KEEP A BALANCED DIET.

Associations
Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite:

1. Color? Black. How wonderfully stereotypical. He has no real favourite (in fact that goes for most of these).
2. Smell? A vaguely metallic smell... and lemon.
3. Time of day? Night? Hurr hurr.
4. Season? Uh... I never thought about it.
5. Book? OLIVER TWIST
6. Music? Classy piano music~
7. Place? ... L-London?
8. Substance? Cyanide~
9. Plant? I honestly have no idea. ;;
10. Animal? Cat.
