Whoa, where did Winter Quarter go?

Mar 10, 2007 19:10

I guess it's time for my quarterly update (check out facebook in the next few days for pics) …yeah yeah I know it's "too" long, but I've only updated three times this whole quarter, and the entries only consisted of a dream, phone conversation, and a story I wrote- nothing actually about my life. I had a lot to catch up on!

Winter Break-ish stuff
--Winter break was da bomb. I didn't work, so I just relaxed…all day, every day. I enjoyed my time hanging out with some of the Ville crew :-)
--Christmas Eve with the whole fam was at our house this year, Jon came.
--Christmas was really nice. I got a flat screen HDTV with built in DVD player, holla! And my mom bought me several cute business suits, but like, none of the jackets fit me right so we had to return them :-( but that turned out okay because I got to deduct those costs from the amount I owed them from buying Christmas presents. lol
--New Year's Eve…was an interesting night. I actually had a lot of fun, but unfortunately quite a few people can't say the same, which was weird because I feel like it's usually the other way around :-/ I wondered if that night would be a prediction that this year was going to be just as ridiculous and insane, but so far I haven't found that to be the case. (phew!)
--I got to spend the day with my grandpa in Lorain before I came back to school. aww Papa :-)
--I also went to this Kiwanis Past-President's Dinner thing, where we honored Mrs. Simashkevich (North's Key Club Advisor) because she's stepping down as advisor since her second baby is on the way, and honoring Mr. McCann because his term as Kiwanis President is over. It was cool because I got to catch up with old Key Club officers and the Kiwanians that I worked with back in the day. And Mr. McCann is still the sweetest man ever…he saw me and was like, "HEL-LO BEAUTIFUL!" with his arms wide open ready for a hug, lol. "How are you? How's life?" "I'm good, it's great!" "Where are you now?" "Ohio State!" "And what are you studying there?" "I want to be an elementary school teacher." ::leans back and clasps hands together:: "Oh WONDERFUL! You will be great at that." Basically, it makes me the happiest person on earth when people tell me that (and with such enthusiasm!)
--I didn't realllly want to come back to school at all. That feeling was soon amplified by the fact that in one of my classes a teacher actually had the nerve to assign a paper due the day after the national championship game…and also by the fact that that game was played the way it was in general. yeah. ceasing discussion now.

Winter Quarter Classes
--I took 18 credit hours instead of my usual 15, and there was a BIG difference.
--Classes went super well, and were fairly easy, even though they were a big pain in my bum most of the time. Among the three classes I took, I had a total of 20 papers to write, including that giant genre project that you may have read in my last entry, which, mind you, wasn't just composing that story, but compiling a binder full of journal entries and research and samples and reflections and an annotated bibliography, etc. Now, I know there are people out there who took harder classes than I did this quarter, but shut up because it was still a lot of work.
--My Life Span Human Development teacher reminded me of Brian Littrell from the Backstreet Boys. holler! We had 3 quizzes and 3 papers in this class, and 2 exams, with a final that will be the third. But luckily it's not comprehensive.
--I already talked about the basics of my writing class in the last entry, but I didn't talk about how much of a pain it was sometimes. For the first paper we had to dig through our basements at home to find "artifacts of our literacy" and write a paper about our "archeological dig." wtf. Thank goodness I only live 20 minutes away…We also had to find and bring in Play-Doh one day for some activity that was supposed to be related to writing. Don't get me wrong, all this stuff WAS interesting, but seriously. ::rolls eyes:: My teacher had the funniest laugh, and she had serious vision problems. She always wore a mini magnifying glass as a necklace around her neck, and if she was looking at you, her eyes looked like she was looking at the person next to you…it was weird. She was a fun teacher though, and I really did enjoy her class.

FEEP!!!
--I'm sure you have seen my away messages about it. This quarter I got to spend four days a week at an elementary school in Hilliard helping out a 3rd grade teacher! (And one day a week in a seminar class at OSU, ugh, so much work) IT WAS SUCH AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE! I wish I could have stayed at the elementary school all day instead of coming back for regular college classes. Since I didn't have any OSU classes on Fridays, I did get to stay all day once a week. I also had to wake up balls early and get all dressed up in business-y clothes, which I surprisingly didn't really mind doing (unlike for my summer job at Motorists) so that's a good sign! I helped the kids with reading maps, spelling and grammar, how to tell time, their biography projects, how to read timelines, went over worksheets, read books to them…the list goes on and on! I learned so much about teaching, it's ridonkulous. FEEP has revealed the many challenges teachers face. Just to name a few, there are constant distractions, it's really hard to stay organized (which will be the hardest thing for me to deal with), you have to know what's too hard for your students, kids will be on all different levels so you have to differentiate their work, they never finish assignments at the same time so you have to be prepared with something for them to do when they're done, remember to ask them questions to push them to answer questions themselves instead of just giving them the answer, and when grading you have to stick with the point of the assignment. If the point was to see if they can read a timeline, don't worry so much about capitalization and stuff. Definitely point it out to them, but you don't need to mark it wrong. I've seen how much work teaching really is, and in all honesty, it made me really nervous, but I think I can handle it. Besides, I'm too far into all this, there's no turning back now! And the rewards? They're tremendous. The kids started trusting me as a teacher, and came to me with questions. They drew me pictures and shared their morning snack with me. They made me Valentine's. They were so sweet, and had no idea how much it meant to me when they gave me morning hugs, or said that they missed me when I had to go to seminar, or how excited they got when they remembered that I was staying the whole day on Friday, or when they told me that they think I'm going to be a good teacher. On my last day I bought Ms. Reitter (their teacher) a bouquet of flowers, and brought in fun pencils for the kids, and wrote them a nice thank you card. Omg, I have to tell you about the rest of my last day though, it was so bittersweet. I was out in the hall helping Ryan with his biography project, and Katherine came out and said that I had to come back to the room in 2 minutes. Megan told me the same thing when she came out to get a drink, and added an "or else!" For that whole two minutes, I kept seeing Katherine peek out in the hall to see if I was coming yet. When I walked into the room, they were all sitting on the reading carpet, full of excitement. They sat me down in Ms. Reitter's comfy teacher chair where she reads to them, and they were all like, "You're not allowed to look behind you!" (Apparently there was a gift back there…) Ms. Reitter said, "Okay, who can tell Miss Campana something that she did well or something that she helped you with?" Hands shot up. "You helped me with my spelling!" "You helped me with my Snowman story!" "You were good at going over our papers with us!" Etc. Then, they presented me with a class book of thank you letters!!! You know, one of those plastic spiral-bound type things? Most. adorable. thing. in. the. universe. They were so excited about it. And the kids that wanted to personally read their letters to me. Umm, it seriously made me cry. Not hard, but I teared up enough for some to fall. "She's crying!" "She's so happy that she's crying!" (lol!) Then Ms. Reitter gave me a thank you note and some chocolates that were from Michael's mom, who volunteers and comes to drop him off in the morning a lot, so she knows me, and Ms. Reitter gave me a present from the class- a thank you card from her, a teacher-esque pencil holder (you know, an apple on top of books) with my "first pencil" in it! Haha, and a bookmark with a cute teacher poem and guardian angel pin, and a set of earrings (??) lol. Then they all gathered around me for a big class picture with me holding up the book, and then before they all got their coats (it was time to go to art, then recess) they surrounded me again with a GIANT group hug. That was the BEST!! Omgzorz. I'm going to miss those kids SO FREAKING MUCH. I got my own group picture a few days before, but I'm afraid to post it because I don't know if that's legal to post children's pictures online without the consent of their parents…and I don't really want to risk it, lol. Hopefully I'll be able to go back once a week next quarter and help out just for the heck of it! :-D :-D :-D

All Kinds of Good News :-)
--I got into the Ohio State Student-Alumni Council! It's a "student organization dedicated to enhancing the connection between students -- past, present and future. We work to create a university that fosters a sense of community and instills in its students a lifelong commitment to our alma mater." We run the major university events like Little Sibs Weekend, Parent's Weekend, Homecoming, May Week, etc. and we’re basically the university's connection to alumni, who give OSU money. lol. So holler!
--I got accepted into my major!!! I'm now a full-fledged, Human Development and Family Science Major, with a specialization in Early Childhood Education. woot!
--I also made it on the Dean's list again this quarter :-)
--I'M MAKING FRIENDS! A few from SAC, which, by the way, the friendships didn't come as quickly and easily as I'd hoped, but it's getting there. We have SAPs and SAPlings, and SAP families. (I don't know what SAP stands for, but it's basically like the whole "little and big" idea in sororities, where they are kind of there to guide you into the organization and help you make friends.) It's actually hard with everyone's busy schedules to find time to hang out with your SAP and SAP families, but I managed to play racquetball (for the first time ever!) with my SAP, Sachin! woot. I've also made a friend from FEEP- Janielle, who was so kind to give me a ride to and from Hilliard every. single. day. I got to know her pretty well from spending 25 minutes there and 25 minutes back in the car together! She's really nice, and I feel like we have a lot in common, and we have discussed our equal lack of friends situation and have agreed to continue to hang out next quarter! yay! (lol)
--I was secretly worried for awhile that SAC wasn't really the organization for me (a bit late for that now, huh?) because I'm more interested in community service, not really volunteering for University Events. I also hardly know anything about OSU, and a lot of times when volunteering you have to talk about the university to potential students or alumni, which I already have a hard enough time striking up a conversation with strangers, so how am I supposed to talk about something that I hardly know anything about? Well, luckily for me, just being in SAC and going to meetings, you find out a lot about what's going on at OSU. And I surprised myself at the first thing I volunteered for because parents asked questions that I was already able to answer just from my experiences here (applying for a major, the dorms, registering for classes, etc.) Also, I recently applied for a the community service program coordinator position, so hopefully if I get that, I can focus more on the community service part of SAC. yayy!
--I FOUND AN APARTMENT FOR NEXT YEAR!!! Ok, so actually my dad "found" it, but I went to check it out on my own and stuff. I signed the lease about a month ago so it's for sure mine! I'm nervous about posting where it's located on the internet, but it's MUCH closer to campus than I am this year. Sayonara East Res! I'm really excited to live on my own. It will almost be how it is now, since this quarter it seemed like I was always home alone. Except next year I can do everything my way. ;-) It's really spacious for a single, and I can't wait to decorate it all cute!! Come visit me and we'll have slumber parties!

A few cutesy-pootsie Jon and Shelley stories
--I have decided that love is when both parties are feeling a bit woozy after the events of New Year's Eve, and it's your boyfriend's birthday, but you spend the afternoon together just watching TV on the couch. Then he puts a pillow under your head, covers you with a blanket, kisses you on the forehead and tucks you in so you can take a nap. :-)
--Love is also when you have a stomach virus, are puking, unable to eat (the extent of what you can eat is bland foods and clear liquids- only soda crackers, plain noodles, bananas, apple sauce, apple juice, sports drinks, and flat sierra mist. No dairy or anything greasy. Nothing that is hard to digest, aka nothing good), Pepto is your new best friend, you can hardly stand for more than a minute at a time, are literally feeling like death, and have no time to be sick due to the unimaginable amount of homework this week, and your boyfriend comes over, boils some noodeles for you, plays "two-person" catch phrase with you for as long as you want, snuggles with you on the couch, and says that he wishes he was the one that was sick, and wishes he could take your sickness from you so you don't have to worry about getting behind. :-)
--Jon had to dog-sit Chewy here while his parents were out of town, and he, Chewy, and I were sitting their couch watching TV and I said, "Aww, you got your girl and your doggy, doesn't get much better than that, huh?" to which he responded, "Yeah it could." which made me think, oh great, I set myself up. He's gonna say it could be better if he had another girl here, or if I made him dinner or something… "Yeah it could…if my girl had her doggy too." awwwww <3

Some Random Things
--Like Jake, I have also been compared to some celebs recently. A lady working at the Wendy's in Hilliard said that I look "JUST" like the girl on the show Friday Night Lights, Minka Kelly? http://imdb.com/name/nm1310368/photogallery Besides having long dark hair and brown eyes, not sure if I agree…but shoot, I'll take it!! Someone also told me recently (I forget who) that I look like Dr. Perry's ex-wife on Scrubs, Christa Miller, who also played the friend on the Drew Carey Show. http://imdb.com/name/nm0588096/photogallery woop!
--I have officially declared "A Cinderella Story" my second favorite movie, just behind "My Dog Skip."
--I've been starting a book collection, not on purpose though. Lately I've wanted to keep the books I had to buy for several classes I've taken simply because I enjoyed them or because I think they will be helpful resources in my future career. Also, some offices in the Education building are moving, and they had a table set up of free Education books, so I went to town, lol. I'm also super excited to start collecting children's books for my future class! (I've seen some really good ones through FEEP and my writing class!)
--TV shows I've REALLY gotten into…I <3 New York, The Hills, and One Tree Hill.
--I have missed my Scrammy dearly. So much, that I actually made up a "poem" about her in my dream last night, LOL. "Scrammy is the firefly of my night." I don't even know what that means.
--I saw Gym Class Heroes at the Newport on Monday. It was pretty awesome for only having known 3 of their songs!! When they played the last song, "Clothes Off", Travis came up to the balcony where we were standing and stood right in front of me and sang!! I WAS INCHES FROM HIM!!
--I'm randomly going to Gatlinburg, Tennessee for Spring Break. LOL. I mean, sure it sounds lame, but with the crowd I'm going with, I know we'll have a lot of fun. And I'm pretty sure my last vacation was the summer before freshman year of high school, and I've never been on a spring break, so I'll take what I can get.
--YO EE OH, YOOO HO. Last night I saw the Wizard of Oz at the Palace Theatre with Britney! It was SO GOOD! I wanted to go because a little girl from my FEEP placement played a munckin! She and all of them were so cute! They had a real Toto, too! Who by the way was flipping adorable, and so well-trained. He barked at the perfect times and just chilled in his little basket while they did their dance routines and such. They attached the actors to harnesses to make them fly- Ms. Gulch on her bike, the Wicked Witch of the West, Glinda the good witch in her pink bubble, the evil flying monkeys, and the coolest tornado ever! The actress that played Dorothy is a freaking junior at Hilliard Davidson, the witch was a little too heavy for our liking, and most of the actors were freaking SWEET and totally nailed the accents of the characters in the movie. BRAVO!

I only have one final this quarter, and it's not until the last possible day at the very last possible time- next Thursday at 3:30. No way I'm waiting around this joint until then, so I'm packing up and coming home tomorrow (!) and will just drive back for my test.

My 20th birthday is in 6 days, that's next Friday, people!! yayayayay!
