On Sunday the 22nd of April, I had been in bed for only two hours when my phone rang. Yes, it is my choice to keep my phone on and near my bed at night - so this is not really a story about being woken up at 5am and being annoyed. It is interesting due to the nature of the caller - on a private number, so I felt like I really had to answer...
See, it was a guy. A guy I'm pretty sure I've never met. A guy whose name I didn't catch, because I was half asleep when I answered. A guy who claimed to have been given my number by a friend of mine. He said he lives in Melbourne, and apparently this friend had said to him "here, my friend just moved to Melbourne, this is her number, you should get in touch with her".
Now, I do find it a little unsettling that someone (allegedly) gave my number to someone I don't know, without my permission, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt (if it indeed happen like this)...
But the main source of my surprise was the fact that at FIVE AM this chap decided that it was a good idea to call this random girl and ask her if she "wants to just chat for a bit and see if we want to meet up". And when I said "no, it's 5am and I want to sleep right now" he asked if he could call back later - and sounded quite surprised when I said "NO!"
"But why not? Don't you want to chat? Your friend thought it would be good for us to meet. Why can't I call back later?"
"Because you've blown your chance! You've called at FIVE O'CLOCK in the morning and WOKEN ME UP! I'm not happy! I never want to hear from you again. Sorry, but that's it."
Almost as soon as I hung up, I realised I'd neglected to ask for the name of the person who had given my number to him. Oh well. Maybe I'll never find out. Or maybe the friend will come forward? :)
