I could hear my dog digging and growling at something in the back yard, so out of curiosity I went outside to see what was up. And my crazy dog had actually managed, somehow, to scrounge up a snake. This poor snake was being tormented by her. The thing was full of blood and entrails from large gashes across its scales from her claws. I felt so bad for the little thing (well, it wasn't so small, it was probably about 7 inches long). I pulled my dog off of it to try to "save it" and then thought, "Shelley, there is no way this thing is going to live now".
So trying to be merciful on the helpless garter snake, instead of let it meet its doom at the paws of my dog, or letting it go to die all alone in a slow and agonizing way, I took a shovel and in one swift motion planted the blade of the shovel perfectly behind the snakes head, chopping it clean off. It gave a few last wriggles, then was gone. i feel bad, but I know there was nothing I could do to save it.
I took it into the front yard and gave it a nice little burial away from the reach of my dog in the flower bed. maybe the flowers can now benefit from the nutrients the snake will give off as it is decomposing in the earth.
Wow, this is my dogs first kill of an animal besides some flys I hope she doesn't decide she likes to kill. That would be bad. Then I'd rename her Kujo. But I think Sybill still fits her well.
