I've been watching The Good Wife more or less back to back for for last however-many weeks/months. I am now up to Season 5, episode 16. Anyone still here who can talk to me about this? Any lonely TV-watching rats or silverfish roaming the corridors of journal-land?

I tried so hard to get into that because ALAN! But I never understood the basic relationships of the main characters.

I suppose you have to watch 1/1 or all is lost.

Unless I am dumb.

That is a possibility.

I always prefer to watch things from the beginning because that's how my brain works, and it did take me a couple of goes to get into it, it's fairly slow-moving. But once I did I was hooked. I totally understand wanting to get into it because of ALAN! (who is definitely great in it) and that was probably a bit of the motivation for me too, but for me, it only clicked because I cared about the ongoing story and all the other characters. Everything really hinges on what happens right at the beginning of the series, so it does help to have that backstory.

Haha, I doubt it's because you're dumb, I am notorious for missing the finer points in TV shows and films - but it may just not be your kind of thing. I've never really watched a law-based thing before, or wanted to, but I found myself really enjoying it. It probably helps if you also like that kind of episodic, mystery-of-the-week type American show though, which I do. It also has interesting, complex women characters of varying ages, which is a big plus for me.

Ok, so the main character is Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies). She's married to Peter Florrick (Chris Noth), the Chicago State's Attorney, and they have two teenage children, Zach (Graham Phillips) and Grace (Mackenzie Vega). The first season begins just after a major sex scandal, as a result of which Peter has been sent to prison for political corruption. While dealing with this, Alicia is also forced out of her life as a stay-at-home mom and goes back to work as a lawyer, with the help of her old law-school friend (and possible love-interest) Will Gardner (Josh Charles). Will's partner at the law-firm is Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski), and they're Alicia's new bosses. Also working there is Cary Agos (Matt Czuchry), a young lawyer who starts off as a rival with Alicia for a permanent position, and Kalinda Sharma (Archie Panjabi), a in-house private investigator who never gives anything away about her private life. Eli Gold (Alan Cumming) comes on board towards the end of the first season as Peter's campaign manager, to help ( ... )
