I am an Octopus.

Of course, being a hippy, I'm a Weirdness Magnet. Shuffling down the Main Street, and a Hare Krishna orbits me slightly. Oh God, I think, before he hones in. Can they not tell that I shall, with my long flowing hair, never be converted to a skinhead movement? Hare Hare No.

He reads me a passage from the Bhagavad-Gita and we talk about his philosophy and it's terribly interesting. Beliefs always are. He explains that there is a Universal Conciousness out there that is listening and watching us and that we're all one. And that everything is made up of this universal harmony of love, and we're all part of Him. And that when one is Transcendentally Illuminated, they are able to transcend the petty hunger of the Body of Organs, the hunger and the pain and the jealousy and the rage. And that we see Krishna/Jesus/Whoever, the Personification of Beauty, and yea, our bodies are taken over with Spirit. It sounded like a bunch of Quantum Physics to me, and I asked him so, gently. I believe I asked:

"So...what do you make of the notion of the universal characteristics, the archetypes that are present in different mythologies worldwide? What do you think of the notion of universal patterns of thought, fears/loves/visions of humanity in general, and common experience? What do you think of the idea of the same thing explained different ways, with the religion coming down to whatever touches your soul, or makes the most sense to you personally?"

I believe he replied with: "Hm. Well... uh... well... the Bhagavad says... well... oh look, the Krishna's are coming. I believe I'll join them."

The only way I can make sense of the world is to start with the basic assumption that I am a godhead of personal experience and that my senses are flawed and all I can understand is what is guided to me, through me, what my intuition tells me, what I already know through Previous Experience. Contrary to everyone I know, and I mean pretty much everybody, I do not understand the assumption of Universal Truth, and it's Persuit through Science, Logic, Rationality. It sounds like a bunch of conciet and arrogance and stupidity and grapefruits to me.

And so it's an odd assumption to have. It leads to a belief in anti-expression. I communicate more with grand sweeping statements, with a fellow sympathetic, smiles and "yeah" and Nods of Wisdom, than I ever achieve with three hours semantic rigour. It's an odd assumption of you Write, anyway.

The Ultimate can never be expressed, but that's okey. Literature has always been a series of spectacular failures, and I do intend to fail most highly.
