FIC: My Density Has Brought Me To You (2/6)

Jan 11, 2010 12:41

Okay, so as many of you have probably realised, I have an awful habit of starting a story and never updating it. The story sits in my head, but somehow I never get round to writing the darn thing! One of my resolutions this year is to actually finish things when I start them, and with that in mind I have gone back to the very first story I ever posted in this community; a semi-crack fic called 'My Density Has Brought Me To You'. The first and (until now) only chapter was posted on the 28th April last year, and I don't expect anyone to remember it, so here is a link to the first chapter.

This chapter is ludicrously short, and I expect the others will be too - I might even finish the whole thing today! In any case, I PROMISE to actually finish this story and update my other WIPs very soon.

Summary: 'It occurs to me that if I ever did perfect a time machine I'd go into the past and give it to myself, thus eliminating the need for me to invent it in the first place... it really takes the pressure off.' ~ Sheldon Cooper.

Sheldon did not give much thought to the mysterious briefcase sitting in his bedroom during the day - he had far more important and interesting things to think about at work - but he began to wonder about it again as he climbed the stairs to the fourth floor that afternoon. He was returning home about half an hour earlier than usual, as Raj had had to leave early for a dental appointment; Sheldon had decided an early ride with Raj would be infinitely preferable to a hellish ride on the back of Howard's motorcycle.

And so it was that Sheldon discovered, as the letter had said he would, the real reason for Leonard's absence from work that day; namely, Penny.

It was perfectly obvious to Sheldon as soon as he walked through the door that Leonard had not spent the day convalescing. There were numerous dirty dishes by the sink and on the coffee table, as well as various articles of clothing strewn over the floor and the armchair. Sheldon raised an eyebrow as his eye fell on a dark blue bra he recognised from having strung it on a telephone wire the year before.

Sheldon closed the door behind him and placed his messenger bag on his desk chair. He could hear now that the shower was running, though whether it was Leonard or Penny that was in the shower was anyone's guess. Sheldon crossed the room and, as he did so, heard Leonard's muffled voice from the other side of the bathroom door, and Penny's answering laugh. They were both in the shower. Sheldon rolled his eyes and walked over to the door.

"I hope you two are planning on cleaning the shower thoroughly once you're finished in there," he called out to them. Then he walked into his room without waiting for an answer.

Sheldon was now absolutely positive that Penny, perhaps with Leonard's help, was responsible for the briefcase that was still sitting in the middle of his floor. It was Leonard that Sheldon had told his theory of time travel to two years ago, but the trick had Penny's fingerprints all over it. She and Leonard must have planned their tryst today, giving her the 'proof' to put in the letter, and she had access to his room thanks to her relationship with Leonard. Then there was the postscript on the letter - be nice to Penny. If nothing else was enough to convince Sheldon that Penny was behind the scheme, those words would be. How ridiculous.

Sheldon approached the briefcase carefully, studying it from all angles. There did not seem to be anything attached to it, so if it was rigged with some kind of booby trap, it must be inside. After a moment's hesitation, Sheldon grasped the handle and picked up the briefcase - it weighed hardly anything at all. In fact, if it were not for a faint rustling sound, Sheldon would have thought that it was empty. But there was a sound, and after shaking the case a little, Sheldon reached the conclusion that there was some kind of paper inside. Well, Sheldon was not going to do something as foolish as open the case - that was clearly what Penny wanted him to do, and he refused to give her the satisfaction. In fact, he was not even going to acknowledge the case's existence, and see how long it would take for Penny to proverbially 'crack'.

Decided, Sheldon put the case in his closet. He was just moving his jackets back into place when there was a knock on his bedroom door. Sheldon had just enough time to shut his closet before Leonard pushed the door open. His hair was wet and he was wearing his bathrobe, and he looked mildly sheepish.

"Er, hi, Sheldon," he said. "You're home early."

"Yes, Koothrapali had a dental appointment, so we left the university half an hour earlier than usual," Sheldon explained. He crossed his room and passed Leonard out into the corridor. "Since your migraine has miraculously disappeared, perhaps we can leave for the comic book store a little early today."
