4. Penny and Leonard were somehow managed to got on the last ship, leaving Earth's orbit to land on the Moon, on a former top secret strategic installment, upgraded in the last 12 years to be able to take in as many people as possible. Twelve years, since a couple of the world's most powerful people knew about that the wave is coming. They prepared for it, of course as best as they could. Leonard still couldn't shake the thought, what would have happened is his best friend were one of the chosen few to knew about it all these years. Of course, finally the information got out, three years ago to be accurate. And since then, Sheldon was able to almost perfect a way to save all of them. He wondered what could he achieved if he had 12 years, as their evacuation ship slowly started to ascend towards the sky.
He tried to help him in his work, were be able at the beginning, but slowly he just got way out of his head. And he wasn't able to help him anymore. He was still given a seat on the ship for his contributions to the project, along with Raj who were possibly already waiting for them at the shadowy side of the Moon. He will be very surprised to see Penny and not Sheldon at his side. But this was the reality now, and Sheldon being his best friend couldn't change the fact that it felt the right way for things to be. He looked at Penny. She was crying without tears. He knew Sheldon never thought about how much Penny will be scarred taking his place on the ship. He was sure that from his overly scientific point of view it was only the logical course of action. But for Penny, it meant heavy guilt, possibly lifelong. At least she will live. He thought to himself.
The ship left the atmosphere and was on route to land in Lunar Station One. The station were ready to take in fifty thousand people. No more. The rest were left behind, including Sheldon Cooper. He just hoped Howard hadn't been so stupid to stay as well, but he couldn't be sure of it, knowing the horny engineer's idiotic behavior sometimes, especially when there is a specimen from the opposite sex involved in the situation. Leonard stared out from his window, to the infinite abyss of space, and hoped that his friends were all be fine. No matter how impossibly his wish seemed right now.
Penny was asleep next to him when he started to see the Station on the surface of the Moon. They were almost there. At safety. He remembered all of a sudden that there was approximately 0,15% chance that the radiation will reach the Lunar Station as well. But still, their odds were certainly better then the ones trapped back at Earth. The plan was to stay and try to survive in the station as long as the radiation wear away slowly from itself. It should take no more than six years. Six years in the Moon. Well that is something he never would have expected to happen to him.
Penny awakened, when their ship was docking in the outer hatch of the station. She was mildly smiling for a second only to darken her expression as she realized where she is. Leonard tried a weak smile, but even he didn't think it would help much.
"I was dreaming, that the wave didn't come" She said softly, almost whispering.
The lights turned green, signaling for them that they can got off the ship, and start exploring their new home for the next couple of years.
