The decade after tomorrowsheldorthecqJune 20 2009, 02:44:30 UTC
Hi!
I am not really here to play in the game just got a story to tell:) So I wanna cheat a little, if it's possible, 'cause I didn't planned to have any pairings in my fic (I am a male so not really shippy:)) but i stumbled upon this community, read this challenge and I just have to write!
In my defense this is my first fanfic ever. Sorry if I shouldn't post it here, feel free to moderate if it's in the wrong place.
Also sorry for my mistakes, english is not my main language...
Otherwise enjoy it!:) I've got two chapters and I'm planning more...
THE DECADE AFTER TOMORROW
1.
Knock,knock,knock.
Penny!
Knock,knock,knock.
Penny!
Knock,knock,knock.
Penny!
She opened the door, her cellphone still in her hand. Sheldon assumed she was just finished talking with her family.
"Sheldon."
"Penny."
For one second they were just sizing up each other. They both looked like crap. Penny was crying so much lately, that she surprised she still had her eyes, and Sheldon became a real workaholic these last few years. Not that he hadn't been that before, but he was like Sheldon-kind of a workaholic now. Ever since he find out of the pulsar radiation wave heading toward Earth he was working non-stop with the best scientific minds and engineers - including Howard - to find a solution to save the human race from it's upcoming extinction. Talking about though years...
"Come in." was all that she could say.
"Thank you."
He went inside her apartment, and surveyed it with only a glance. Her stuff was already packed. She was ready to go home, to spend the last hours with her family. Or so she thought she will.
"Sheldon, it is really nice for you to come and say goodbye to me in person, but ain't you have an evac ship to reach?"
"Actually, I don't have."
"What?" Penny was looking at him with total confusion on her face.
"Here" He said, pulling out one golden colored card. "I am staying. This is my access card for the ship. You can get on with it to the last evacuation ship leaving at about two hours from now."
Re: The decade after tomorrowsheldorthecqJune 20 2009, 02:47:23 UTC
"What?" was all she could say again at first. And then she started to realize what he just sad.
"No, no, no! Put away that thing! I am not gonna take your card! Your chance to live! No matter what you say about how your grandma used to tell you how important chivalry is. It's just too much! You go and get on that ship!"
"Penny I can assure you, that my moderate sense of gallantry has nothing to do with my current proposal for you. You see, you misunderstood me before. I am not heroically sacrificing my chance of survival only for that you can live. I am simply not going, hence there I have a spare access card which I won't plan to use. Since Leonard and Raj are already have their cards, and with my family already on Lunar Station, you seemed to be the logical choice for me to give my access card."
"So you don't wanna go?" Penny was still puzzled. "Why the hell wouldn't you wanna go?"
"You remember the research I have done lately?"
"Of the shield-thingy that will save people and other lifeforms from the deathly radiation of the wave? You kidding?" Like she possibly could not remember that.
"Yes, that one. Well, after much discussion and I might say much more yelling, I was able to convince our government to let me finish the work and it looks like that not long before the wave hits our planet, I will have a chance to...figuratively speaking, raise our shields!"
Penny didn't need a second to figure out what his friend said this time.
"Oh!My!God! That's great news!" She was genuinely happy for the first time in a long time.
"But than I don't need this card at all. I'm sure you will save us with your shield-thingy!" It wasn't that much of an exaggeration actually. After it was announced that the world will come to an end a few years from then, Sheldon Cooper Ph.D become somewhat a legend, the icon of a project to save the world as we know it. He and a bunch of other scientists have worked hard to find a way to save our race. Penny doesn't really understand it, but for some reason the wave or whatever had a certain radiation that cannot be absorbed or neutralized by any known method. But Sheldon has come up with an experimental energy field, that could effectively protect lifeforms from that radiation. So the last few years he worked on that technology side by side with Howard. Although Penny never thought they were gonna finish it in time. But of course, since when does Sheldon ever quit when he started something? No he wasn't a quitter! Penny was just about to drop that stupid plastic card out of the window, but Sheldon's raised arm stopped her.
"Penny! I only sad I try raising a protective shield around our planet to save us from this radiation. Well, how could I say this..." He was pausing for a moment. "My objective scientific opinion is, that I will fail, and so do it miserably."
"Fail? You can't fail!" She started to become hysterical now. Sheldon took a mental note to point out how quickly his neighbor's emotions were able to converse.
"Yet I am afraid that I will." He said it with almost recognizable sadness in his voice.
"But...but then, why are you not going to take off with the last ship?"
"Because I sad I will most likely fail. A do not said that I won't try to succeed!" He started to became something what other people could call edgy. This conversation has already took much more time than he anticipated. It seemed like all Penny could do sometimes is repeat the facts that he told her.
"Now, take this card and catch the last ship before it's too late."
"Sweetie, I'm sorry but I...I just can't! I still feel that I will be taking your place."
"Of course you are, but I already told the authorities, they will expect you!"
"No! I mean I take your chance to live through this nightmare!"
"Oh, Penny!" He was really pissed now, no other word would have sufficed. He simply don't have time for this, despite his fondness to correct and explain things of any nature to lesser minds.

Well, I am not sure I can keep any promises 'cause as long as I got with it, they're pretty much separated from each other. But there will be a reunion;)

Then he just turned and got out the door, leaving behind a speechless Penny.
"My god! I should have just give it to the half-blind cleaning lady at the cafeteria!" grumbled Sheldon to himself as he closed the door behind.
Penny couldn't move, couldn't speak. She almost couldn't breathe.
What the hell just happened?
It seemed, that Sheldon just gave up his chance of survival to
try something, that he himself admitted that won't work. Yet he
will stay, and try it anyway. It was the most absurd thing as
just before she started crying, a little smile left her lips.
Yep! He really wasn't a quitter!
Ok, that was chapter 1. I don't wanna send more untill I know that it's okay for me to do so.
