"They don't believe in equals on this show. They have succeeded in making Amy liked because she grimaces behind Sheldon's back and is seen to endure him, like she's some wonderful person for putting up with him."
I'm afraid this is true. But isn't it funny how Sheldon and his idiosyncrasies and the way Amy reacts to him are what they are using to make the Amy character sympathetic? They do the same thing with Leonard to a great extent too i.e. they draw a lot of the sympathy for that character from the fact that he has to deal with someone like Sheldon. Eliminate a character like Sheldon and how are Leonard and Amy going to play the victim card anymore?
But I personally don't find the bitter, mean reactions by Amy and Leonard fun to watch at all, and I find it sad that for the "hero and the heroin" of the show to look wise, mature, sympathetic and justified, the show needs to constantly beat the other characters down.
"Also the actress is just not good enough. She's lacking that vital ingredient which the character needs to keep the humor in the scenes."
I completely agree about the actress and the humor. I know even in silliest comedies, there are moments that need to be played out as serious and poignant. But it's strange that when it comes to a character like Sheldon, even the most serious, life-changing situations such as his work being sabotaged are treated as comedy and played for laughs and he is barely allowed to react seriously, but when it comes to Amy, the little, fun, everyday interactions that are *supposed* to be comedy are played with such unnecessary gravity, seriousness, sadness and tension. A recent example being the prank Sheldon tried to pull on Amy, or his comment about satisfaction in this episode...the way Amy frowns and sighs and grimaces in such situations is exaggerated and completely unnecessary IMO. When watching Amy, I'm sometimes like, 'Lighten up Mayim/Amy! This is a comedy and these reactions and interactions are supposed to be FUNNY, for God's sake!'
Like when she was singing Neil Diamond. Also, I still crack up at the tiara bit and when she wanted to include the line, "Cuz we be dropping science son!" and she was so giddy about that.
I completely agree. I remember seeing Mary Tyler Moore commenting once that the best comedy always stems from some sort of conflict. TBBT had conflict in spades with Sheldon and Penny in S1-3. As a result, those early episodes are undoubtedly regarded as some of the best of the entire series. Why TPTB chose to separate the characters and replace the natural conflict that existed between Sheldon and Penny with the rather lacklustre comedic relationships of LP and SA, I will never truly understand. As Fran said so brilliantly, when it comes to Amy, the dramatic interactions that should resonate with the audience are now being played for laughs, while the everyday "fun" interactions carry the unnecessary weight of gravity and tension. However, since I choose to perceive everything with Shenny endgame in mind, I have to believe that Mayim's acting choices are deliberate and calculated. With any luck, the reason that I feel nothing for the SA and LP relationships is due to the fact that, at the end of the day when this series is over, I was never meant to in the first place. Hopefully, this is a tribute to the actors' talent as opposed to any perceived lack of it.
