Hey this is a bit OT, but I figured here was as good a place to post it as any.
Even if you are not a Frasier fan, I think you will find this scene deeply insightful. Start it from 3:58 and run it till 5:45.
In it, Niles, who is married by the way, talks about never being truly happy in his whole life. Then, he goes on to describe the relationship with his wife. He says it is love, but when he describes it, it is clearly not love. It's a "different kind of love." Starting to sound all too familiar? Guess what, people? When love is a "different kind of love," it ain't love.
He talks about their boring existence. Him doing puzzles; her playing the harp, and describes it making them "perfectly content." But Frasier knows it isn't that healthy a relationship, and describes it as Hitler, towards the end.
Just check it out! :)

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! What a great clip. The parallels are obvious. Insert Sheldon and Amy and you pretty much have the same story. Hopefully, Sheldon realizes that love and fondness are not the same thing! Sadly, I anticipate the Lennys will use your example and twist it to their advantage. They will see a payout with Niles pining over Daphne and use it to justify their ship.
Lenny shippers would be pulling a muscle trying to stretch with that comparison. Leonard and Penny have been having awkward hookups since the beginning and then breaking up. Lather, rinse, repeat

Oh my gosh I thought I was the only one who thought that way! That's totally how I feel right now, like why do I continue reading the reports if I already know what's coming by the end of this entire show?! Everything is just so predictable! The only question is just 'When is all of THAT (Lenny marriage, Shamy sex, Prnny's big break, Sheldon's Nobel Prize) going to happen you know?!
I think it's just too attempting for the writers to not have it all end with the four couples paired off and all getting serious (engaged, marriage, or a baby) and just wrap the show up in a neat cliche package and keep collect those big fat paychecks from CBS because people keep watching. I mean, if you could do the most predictable easy thing and still get ratings and praise from critics, would you try to be creative and try different things with the characters including maybe even cutting one off the show? Nah. TPTB are on the good ship lolly pop and all is cotton candy and gum drops. Noway they'll shake up anything at this point of the series. They're gonna ride these pairings to the end because it's just what appeals to the base of tv watchers and what is easiest to do

Here's the thing though: their current pairings are NOT what appeals to the majority of their fanbase. I've done google searches and looked on fanfiction.net and AO3, and while the information I've gathered points that Lenny is the most popular ship, it is closely followed by SHENNY. Not Shamy, not Howard/Bernadette, not Raj/Howard. Sheldon/Penny are the second most popular ship. And when it comes to fanfiction, we Shenny fans have all the other competition beat. More than half of the fanfics on both AO3 and fanfiction are about Shenny. ALL the other pairings, including crack-ships like Leonard/Sheldon and Penny/Amy make up the other half. Now, you can argue that people are writing Shenny fanfics because they need a place to make their non-canon shipper dreams come true. But if you compare BBT to other fandoms like Harry Potter or the Vampire Diaries that still get copious fanfic written about their CANON
( ... )
Ah yes, but how does that explain the Lenny vs Shenny? They can't very well use that excuse, now can they?
I know common wisdom is that non-canon couples are significantly more popular in the FF community than canon ones. But, I gotta agree with the above assessment. In all of my "fandoms," the non-canon and canon couples' stories are usually relatively equal. There are a few where the canon and/or popular couple have a clear majority of the stories. I guess all I am saying is that I don't think it is fair for TPTB or people in general to dismiss Shenny's popularity in fan fiction as some sort of anomaly.
You're correct. Very rarely do the viewers who are vocal online about a show add up to a good portion of viewers let alone half the viewers. There are examples all over to support this including online petitions and online campaigns to save shows that were getting piss poor ratings and the network would give the shows another chance only to see the ratings remain low or even fall. I know that there have been campaigns started online to remove certain characters from a reality show and when the producers listened and got rid of half the cast and replaced them with other people, because they were doing what the so-called vocal majority online wanted, the show wound up falling in ratings with the cast changes.
With 17 to 19 million viewers on average no way in hell most, or even half the viewers are on the fan sites, tumblr or tweeting about show.
I think I'm the only one that doesn't believe there'll be more seasons after seven, may e it's cause I believe the writers just might not have any more stories to tell for the characters except like you said: marriage, children, or moving out. I hardly doubt they'll take out a character from the gang, no matter how unpopular they are cause at some point they'll be useful for at least something's which is why Alex is my last hope right now, I don't know I think she'll either bring the Lenny emotionally closer or farther apart....hopefully they don't take her out too soon.
Money definitely trumps anything. As long as people are watching in big numbers then tptb have no reason to end the show next season. CBS will back up the Brink's truck to keep the main three; Kaley, Jim and Johnny another two or three season beyond S7. And if people are watching in huge numbers and critics are still heaping praise and award noms to the show, the writers and producers won't think they're heading in a bad direction. They'll keep on skipping down that Shenny/Shamy shipper road.
The only way I could see it NOT going beyond seven, would be if they did some sort of spinoff. The people that are ready to move on can move on, the people that want to stay on can stay on, or they can sell the rights to another set of writers/producers. 7 years of Big Bang and 5 or 6 years of a spinoff would be more valuable to them than 10 years of Big Bang. (But, only if Sheldon is involved in the spinoff.)
But, I agree with what others said. It is about the bottom dollar, and as long as the show is profitable, they will keep it going, even if it is creatively bunk. Look at 2 1/2 Men. It should have died years ago, but it makes money, so there it is, still on our television. Well, not mine, because I don't watch it, but figuratively on our televisions.
You're right, I could've sworn I read somewhere that him wouldn't want to be in the show till he was fifty which I would agree with if I was in his shoes. I would honestly love a spinoff but if Sheldon ain't in it I won't even bother watching or rather reading about in the taping reports, that us if the writers are generous enough to do that. And if that is the case then I they better create a better plot for these characters, I mean they can't keep on keeping them in a safety net for long, time to think of something new and unexpected. Is there really enough story to tell for both Lenny AND Shamy? I'm thinking marriage here, trips, or family meetings

If the writers themselves can't even manage to care about what the characters like, dislike, prefer, etc, why should I?
Bitter, party of one here.....lol
