Prompt: Robot

He honestly liked it when the guys called him a robot. The comparison to C3PO really did flatter him. He felt a surge of pride instead of shame when anyone sneered that kind of accusation of him. It just cemented his feelings of superiority. To be different was to be better. Especially when it came to the sniveling, irrational, petty people he tended to find himself around at the university. If being different then all the troglodytes of the world meant he was a freak, then by damnit, that was something to be proud of!
He never understood the guy’s obsession with fitting in. Blending in. Becoming less than they could be to become socially acceptable in the eyes of a dumb jock or a ditsy cheerleader. Or their adult counterparts.

When Leonard called him a robot for not understanding his emotional turmoil after a break up, Sheldon smiled proudly. When Sheldon failed to understand Raj’s spiritual needs, Raj called him the Tin Man. Mocked him for not having a heart. Sheldon didn’t mind in the slightest. If not understanding superstitious nonsense meant you weren’t human, than homo novus he was. Howard comparing his brain to a CPU was his favorite. If he was so different than Wolowitz that he was compared to a computer, then that was a great accomplishment. Sheldon never wanted to be like Howard. Never wanted to be weak like any his friends.

So why is it that he felt like the wind was knocked out of him when ,i>she yelled that he was a robot during his sad attempt to comfort her? Why didn’t that make him proud? Instead, it felt like there was a knot in his stomach and after she stormed back to her apartment, why did he dwell on it at all? Why did he care enough to research comforting techniques online? And for heaven’s sake, why did he lower himself by apologizing? He doesn’t know. What he does know is that, when she smiled at him through her tears, and said “I’m sorry too Sheldon. Sometimes I forget you’re my little Wall-E. No matter how much you hide it from people”, something clicked in his brain. And he didn’t even try to convince her otherwise.
