"Never Let Me Go" by Judy Bridgewater is a ficticious song. I orignally found this out when I was searching for the song the book was based on. I thought that the lyrics would be meaningful; I thought they would add to the depth of the novel. I was most dissappointed.
Funnily enough, I think the fact that it was a ficional song is highly significant. Kathy's "happy life" is entirely fictional. She leads us through the book with a sense of innocence that, in the end, translates into ignorance. I was let down when I discovered that the song had no "real" meaning outside of the novel. This led me to think of all of Kathy's let downs. I can only imagine how Kathy was let down when she discovered the truth about many things from her guardians.
ON THE OTHER HAND, did Ishiguro have other songs, other lyrics in mind? I am sure, given enough time, I could even find an album cover that would match Kathy's depiction of a sexy, flirting woman in a purple satin dress... Most of the following lyrics have that sentimental bent that Kathy seems to have. (There are a lot more songs with this title as well.)
