He was on the border now. Last night's rain scattered as he pulled his hood off- here, it was nothing but dust and sun. A lonely sign swung nearby. Link walked along the margins, entered the small roadside place. Inside, it was emptiness and dust, some people tending the counter.

Where had things gone? His eyes looked like they had lost the pieces to this mad puzzle- and he never really could hide what was behind his eyes, as someone had once pointed out to him. The shadow of a dream followed him as he took his seat...

From where he was he could see the desert outside, stretching for miles without mercy. He leaned his head into his palm and sighed softly, as though that might offer him some respite from this nowhere feeling.

The room at the local inn was bare- anonymous feelings had been left here, but whoever cleaned it had made an effort to hide the traces in the linen. Nighttime had descended a long time ago. He was sitting on an old wooden chair, planning the next stop...

"Why the look, Hero?"

Link turned in his chair- his nerves frozen shot as he scanned the walls with urgency. Among the shadows that descended, there he stood- eyes burning low (but strangely smiling), skin rusty and sunny as it had always been...sweetness still exuding, breathing off his blood.

"Sheik-" Link answered, and he let out a half-laugh: his gut said it was only an illusion.

Sheik answered with a flash of the eyes. The swimming moonlight showed what he truly was. He leaned against the wall, wreathed in shadows- his eyes caught sight of the map lying on the table. "What are you doing?" he asked, the words searing into Link like a burn.

"-Planning," Link answered, on the edge of his chair.

"Has memory deceived you?"

Link paused- eyes childlike and lost. "I can't- it's hard.- I have to find you."

Sheik's eyes cut down the notion like forest fire. "I never-"

"I felt you," Link said, as yesterday clamored into his throat like moon. "You were there. I know that, I-"

His red eyes scanned the room casually; he nodded. "Yes. I know."

Link's eyes settled on Sheik's form- his spine, holding the balance of his feline movements, and oh- his heart was trampled. "I have to find you. There's nothing without you."

"Yes," Sheik answered, with a slight movement that spoke gentleness, "But it's time to leave those things behind."

"Sheik-" Link began, rising abruptly from his seat- but the night was already two steps ahead of him, and whatever traces had risen from his dreams dissolved into the faceless shadows. Silence hung thick in the air. Seeing there was nothing now, he leaned against the wall where he had been- looked out the window into the coyote night.

The same swingin' sign outside- vultures circled about the sun, and Link stepped out, shrugging uncomfortably into his cloak- feeling like a guest in all possible ways. These dreams, these memories, of Sheik, were all he was going on now. It was insisted that he was gone- but then why did he feel him so tangible and near- always?

Dust clouds rolled up on the road. His eyes were reflective as he shuffled his hands into his pockets, admitting life was hard. In the blood in his throat, he felt that one day, he would be freed from this master trick. His mind full of nothing but the sweetness and the dark, he began- one step closer, one more possibility thrown to tomorrow.
