This is hilarious:
http://www.oldmanmurray.com/features/39.htmlBasically, a couple of guys went and "scientifically determined" a rating system for how good a video game, based on the number of seconds it takes from the start of the game to the first time you see a crate (StC: Start to Crate). Apparently, seeing a crate signals that the game designers have completely run out of ideas. Barrels (or "circular crates") count too. There's a few pages of analysis of different games, with amusing commentary.
For example:
Heretic 2
StC: 0 seconds
Notes: Heretic 2 starts you off staring right at a large crate.
Comments:
Kevin: That's very bad.
erik: Yes. It's observably, undeniably bad. It's as if the lead designer arrived at work on day one, sat down at his desk, sharpened a pencil, threw up his hands and said "well, I can't think of anything."
