So I'm watching Anderson's show today on Muslim Americans and damn are there some obvious products of Fox News. I can admit that I am not objective on this and I have my own qualms, the largest being my hate of the burka and what it stands for in countries where women don't have nearly enough rights but I don't like a lot of aspects of many religions and I'd never do a lot of the shit that some of these people do.
I grew up in Toronto and not GTA like actual 416 area code Toronto. I was on a bus to school everyday where being white put me as the minority and I can tell you now that a lot of those people who spoke up today in that audience have never been in that position. I have honestly never seen an obviously Muslim person on a plane and gotten worried. Mostly because I believe in the fundamental of self-preservation. I have seen one in line for security and gone "it sucks to be you" because being a young white female I've never been held up for anything except for that one time that I had a change purse in my bra and forgot about it.
But this one woman is talking about how people who have called themselves Christian and have murdered people aren't Christian but Muslims who do that are Muslim and Muslims who don't condone it aren't Muslim. That's offensive on so many levels. The KKK were Christian, McVay was Christian, that fucking Norse monster wrote a novel length manifesto about why he was doing this for Jesus. There are shitty Christians and I guess since it was a few centuries ago, the Crusades are completely forgotten but Christianity has done a lot of shitty things to not just Muslims but Jews and other sects of Christians, against everyone really who wasn't down with their ideology.
So can we can it with the our religion makes us good people and yours doesn't because no one is clean enough to throw stones except maybe the Quakers and Shakers. Not even the Amish can go there with some recent Amish on Amish crime.
I commend the woman who said that she was nervous but she was also from a mostly white community and said she was ignorant but wanted to learn more so she wouldn't be. That is big to be able to admit that and she is my favourite. I also like the woman who brought up the KKK but for the most part, to that one woman, stop doing your research on biased in the way you want web sites and watching only Fox News because there is so much out there otherwise.
Read some Irshad Manji, a woman who had to come to terms with her religion in regards to both her sex and her sexual-orientation. Read some BBC, read some Al-Jazeera, read from sources that are biased the other way. Just get out there and when you do your research, look out further. Anyone can make the bible look like the shittiest, worst thing to read by with careful editting of select passages because they are in there.
