music post!

The music I've been listening to lately is... different from what I usually listen to.

01. Rise Up With Fists!! - Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins
it's like trying to clean the ocean, what do you think, you can drain it?
So I've absolutely no idea what this song is about, but I DO know that it's beautiful. The Watson Twins' backing vocals are amazing. The melody is amazing. Jenny Lewis is amazing. And incredibly pretty.

02. Suddenly I See - KT Tunstall
and everything around her is a silver pool of light
I don't even like KT Tunstall. Or that's what I thought. Then I got hooked on this song. And found out that the rest of her album is okay. So I migth have changed my mind. I just like how happy this song is. I have a hard time finding happy songs I really love.

03. Nobody Knows Me At All - The Weepies
very late at night, and in the morning light, nobody knows me at all
An incredibly simple but catchy song... it's been rainy and gray in Iceland lately, and this song is the perfect song for a rainy day.

04. It Just Is - Rilo Kiley
this loss isn't good enough for sorrow or inspiration
Another very simple song. One verse and a chorus repeated three times, but so pretty! I read somewhere that it's about the death of Elliot Smith, but I don't know enough about him to make the connection, I guess.

05. What If I'm Right? - Sandi Thom
and you'll always tape the football and let me watch my soap
So occasionally I get hooked on a bad pop song. Here's one. But it's catchy! And it's not the BAD type of pop, although I do think it's still not very good music. Whatever. It's an upbeat tune. With pessimistic lyrics. I like that. I like it when the lyrics don't match the feel of the song.

06. Bessa - Tilly And The Wall
and my heart, it is close enough to breaking, that it hurts just listening to your songs
I saw Tilly And The Wall this year at Airwaves. Twice! Once was at a big concert, with lots of people. The other was at a tiny coffee shop (that sells organic and fair-trade products, yay!), and it was amazing. They didn't play my very favorite Tilly song, but when they asked for requests (I yelled LOST GIRLS!! but I guess I wasn't loud enough) they played this. And it is wonderful live. The recording is good. But hearing it live was incredible.

07. BYOS - Regina Spektor
I brought my own shovel, dug up here this well
What's a music post without Regina!? I've probably posted this song before, but it's amazing so here it is again. It's not on any of her albums - I'm not really sure where it's from, it's probably either a demo or a b-side... and it's great to sing along to, especially when you're a little bit mad.

08. Succexy - Metric
all we do is talk, sit, switch screens
Metric also played at Airwaves this year. I danced a lot. It was amazing. I'd only listened to one of their songs before seeing them live, and usually I'll go to concerts, love the show, then go home and listen to their music and it's just kinda... blah. But I really like Metric.

09. Sign On The Door - Kasey Chambers
I covered up my failure and called it happiness
Not really a typical Kasey song. It's happy, for one thing, which is just crazy. And a lot more pop than her usual stuff. But good, like always.

10. Barfly - Jeff Who?
it starts with a haircut that you don't understand
I pretty much never post songs by Icelandic artists. Okay, nearly never. And I never post songs by Icelandic rock bands that are only known... here. Mostly because I'm never really familiar with them anyway, and also because usually, they suck. This is one catchy tune, though, and it is practically impossible to go out to ANY bar/club and not hear this song. Warning, though: the end sucks. But the first two minutes more than make up for the sucky ending.

11. Something Burning - Deb Talan
everytime I see a cardigan I think of you
This song easily makes it onto my all-time-favorites list. That's all I can say. It's wonderful.

12. Hurricane - Mindy Smith
I saw the fire light the sky, but there's no sign of rain anywhere
This song makes me cry every time I listen to it. For some reason, I tend to listen to it on the bus, on my way home from work. And my job doesn't depress me at all - I love my job. Maybe it's because it's usually starting to get dark just around that time, and the song has a nice fall-evening feel to it? I don't know. But it's a beautiful song.
