So I sent my family a link to the cnn interview with ray nagin that mimeograph posted. I was really moved by the article and felt it gave me an inside view instead of sitting over here in japan where my students nod politely and refuse to comment intelligently on photos of mississippi and louisiana.

Here is my mom's response:

And it's a sham that New Orleans was such corrupt city that they did not have any emergency plans. What
really makes me mad is that the mayor is screaming on TV for all these agency to help his people when in fact he did nothing to get his city ready for this. I could go now and now about the crooked cop's and government officials. The governor of the state even refused the governments help, until the last minute.

Try not to dwell on this too much it doesn't help.

Here is my brother's response:

The stateside perspective is that mayor Nagin is not going to win any Rudy Gulliani crisis
leadership awards any time soon. He has been harshly critisized for lack of planning
and coordination.

The Nagin interview was well spoken, moving, and blunt. I have never heard such straight talk coming from a politican. The international perspective is that the federal gov didn't move fast enough. I never said Nagin was a good politician, but i'm surprised that i forwarded the interview and my family both emailed me back that nagin is bad and that I'm not reading the right articles on the internet. wtf?
