I think the New Yorker has been in a mini slump. I've burned through the last few issues much more quickly than usual. It could just be that I'm not interested in the articles that other New Yorker readers are interested in, but I've found myself getting a little impatient-like, "Why won't you fuckers publish a profile of SOMEONE INTERESTING?! And bring back the full-page Roz Chast cartoons on the back page?!?! GAHHHH"
Yeah, I've noticed that recently, too. I haven't seen any articles recently that I've really wanted to read. And being in school and all and "busy", I can really only read articles that scream out, "READ ME." I'm not a big Roz Chast fan, but I do agree that SOMETHING else needs to go on the back page. The cartoon contest was cute at first, but now it's just annoying me. There are cartoons all over the magazine. Let's see something different on the back page (a larger cartoon, a sketch, something). Fans of the cartoon contest can get their caption-writing jollies out online or something.
I'm definitely in agreement about the slump and the back page. I find myself flipping through quicker and almost struggling to make myself care about the articles, and the tone of this week's football on TV article was just so obnoxious I stopped reading. I have a long subway commute (45 min - 1 hr) so I can read something more substantial, i.e. a book. Lately I've been asking myself why I don't, and I think it's because I feel like I have to read the New Yorker because I have it. I think this week is my last week before I run out for good
