When he finds the wine bottle, there is hope. When he finds the storage unit, there is joy. But as he actually faces Neal (Neal who is alive; a part of him still didn’t believe it even as he got on the flight to Paris), Peter is overwhelmed by a myriad of emotions that are threatening to suffocate him. He doesn’t bother to hide his tears of - relief? anger, amazement? it doesn’t really matter - he stares at Neal, looks at the man he buried; the man that was his brother and son and his best friend -
“You son of a bitch.”
And then Neal moves to hug him - “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry - ”
- It’s not okay. He can’t say that, it’s not - he doesn’t know how they’ll move past this; he never expected to be so damn lucky and actually talk to Neal again.
“So, Paris. What’s the best thing to see around here?” Peter asks once he gets his voice back.
“If you wanna talk, we can go to my place,” Neal suggests, his voice as shaky as Peter feels.
What he wants is to get the last year back, but he’ll settle for some time to get used to this new reality. “Not just yet, I need… Damn it, Neal, you’re here. You’re not dead.”
“Stating the obvious?” asks Neal with a tiny smile.
Peter shakes his head. “You have no idea…”
The number of times he imagined this. All the ways he felt broken; all the time he thought it over and what should have he done differently; the anger and guilt and grief -
Neal clears his throat. “It’s almost sunset. We can go to Montmartre and then to my apartment.”
“All right.”
Later, as they sit on a bench and watch the shadows fall over Sacré-Coeur, Peter takes Neal’s hand to feel sure that he is still there, and Neal lets him.
His heart sings with pure, unadulterated happiness.
