Fairy tales + 3 giveaways + Boston = goodness

I have two items and 3 middle grade giveaways to blog about today, and strangely two of them have something in common - Boston!

Next month, one of my fellow debut authors from the Elevensies is releasing her novel. Anna Staniszewski's MY VERY UNFAIRY TALE LIFE (Sourcebooks) will be hitting the stores November 1. I was lucky enough to get a ARC ahead of time - though unlucky that I had to wait in line for my daughter to finish reading it. This is what happens when you read the same books: competition.

At any rate, we both LOVED the book. I loved the sly humor, the bizarre and zany plot twists and some very strange villains. My daughter loved the adventure and the plot twists, too.

I think MY VERY UNFAIRY TALE LIFE is a great book to read with your kid, because some of the humor works at two levels, kind of like a wink and elbow nudge to adults. I think Jenny is the type of adventurer that young girls will relate to and will cheer on, and she is also a new kind of heroine that parents will adore, too -- a strong, smart girl that knows how take a joke.

Now, if your interest has been piqued, I have some really good news -- Anna is giving away an ARC this month. Click here to find out how you can win a free ARC! The giveaway ends October 31.

By the way, if you think My VERY UNFAIRY TALE LIFE is set in Boston...uh, no. But Anna Staniszewski is a Bostonian. A graduate of the Simmon College graduate program in Writing for Children AND Children's Literature, Anna went on to be the 2006 writer-in-residence at the Boston Public Library. So like Jenny, she's a strong, smart girl, too! Anna still lives in the Boston area today.

Which leads me to my other Boston item.

This Saturday, October 22 at 2 pm, I will be visiting the Cambridge Public Library in Cambridge, MA to talk about Vanished! I'll also do a short reading, sign books, and we will have a real live musical demo of the veena, the instrument featured in my novel. Hope to see some of you there!

And if you come, you can find out why this guy here important!

Now for the other 2 giveaways:

SLEUTHS, SPIES, AND ALIBIS, a new blog on mysteries for children and teens, have kindly chased me down and thrown me in their interrogation room. See what I had to say there under duress.

At the end of it, I broke down and offered two books in surrender: a brand-new copy of VANISHED, along with a copy of WITH A NAME LIKE LOVE by another fellow middle grade debut author, Tess Hilmo. Stop by and comment to be entered in the giveaway!

p.s. The key to the interrogation room is hanging on the hook next to the door. You can let me out and no one will know. Ssshh.
