My mom found out about a concert series here in town which is pretty fantastic. For six concerts, a regular adult can get a season ticket for $50 and a student for only $10. Needless to say, we got tickets. Tonight was the first concert for this year, and it was the
Presidio Brass.
They're actually quite marvelous. I realize that it sounds incredibly condisending to have the 'actually' in there, but it's Staunton so I didn't know how good the groups that they could draw would be. They're good. They're also fun. They are goofballs, which made the evening even more enjoyable. Their regular horn player wasn't there because his father passed on last night, but they flew out a classmate of one of their trumpet players and for such short notice, she was fantastic. Scratch that, she was fantastic, period. She used a stand, where everyone else had it memorized, but the fact that she was able to flawlessly hold up a demanding part in a two-hour concert with maybe two days notice? Damn. And this isn't stuff that would be familliar to horn players, these are pieces that more often than not were arranged for brass quintets.
