Title: A Hint of Peace
Author: Shealynn
Rating: PG
Characters: Sam, Dean (no slash)
Word count: 200
Summary: Double drabble future!fic. It's the simple things that keep them going.

Wait.

The whisper of steps in the forest slows, stops. Weapons are forgotten in the moment as the light of the rising sun filters slowly through the reaching limbs of the trees, bringing green life to the dark landscape; light transforms it from a land of nightmares to a lush escape.

This simplicity, so easy to overlook, is what makes Sam remember why he fights, why he's still here.

He sees the mask on Dean's face-slightly amused, haunted, shuttered-fall away as the sunlight touches his skin. There is a startling humanity there, something vulnerable and real that Sam had feared forever lost. It is rare that he sees Dean in the light anymore when everything, even at mid-day, is dark.

The moment stretches, timeless. It is to be savored before more blood is spilt, before more bandages are applied to the scars most recently laid open. Their skin is not clean anymore-no inch of it unmarked, unburned, untouched. They're fighting with nothing but scar tissue to protect them.

Yet still they persist.

This sunrise is the calm before the storm, a glimpse of light in a world of darkness, a hint of peace in a never-ending war.
