Puddles are indicative of Trouble

For many weeks now, my ancient water heater has had a wee puddle underneath. This puddle tried to speak to me. It said, "Hey, kaygee! This water heater has seen better days. It's prolly more than 30 years old! You should really think about getting a new one, chica!"

But I did what I do best. Put my hands over my ears and sang out, "Lalalalalala! I can't hear you!"

So, this weekend when the hot water seemed to be more on the warmish side, guess what was happening in my basement? That's right, arterial spray from the water heater as it died a slow painful watery death. It was muggy like the Amazon and Ladecca's boxes were slowly turning to mush. I turned off the water and the electricity immediately and started sweeping the stream towards the drain in the floor.

The rest of the afternoon was spent sandbagging, unpacking wet boxes and drying off the contents, putting together a shop-vac, sweeping and vacuuming the continuing stream of water from the tank... it stopped spraying, but was still leaking.

4 days of cold showers later, I am the proud owner of a new 50 gallon water heater with nifty energy saving features. Happiness, along with long hot showers, has returned to Montgomery Manor yet again. The moral of the story? Pay attention to puddles!
