The point is that most of what we currently hold sacred is only sacred because it was thought to be sacred yesterday. Surely, if we could create the world anew, the practice of organizing our lives around untestable propositions found in ancient literature-to say nothing of killing and dying for them-would be impossible to justify. What stops us from finding it impossible now?
---------------
I do believe that, at one point, the Bible and Koran helped the masses of people and related to their lives in a literal and not metaphorical sense. Today, however, we have reached a point where we have gone beyond any worldly use of these ancient writings. Not only are they out of date and not relevant to the modern world, but they hold canons within their testaments that cannot even be upheld these days. In certain parts of the bible, God makes it perfectly clear that if your spouse or if your kids came home one day and started praising Krishna, that you are obligated by GOD to kill your children or your signifigant other. Why do we not follow these commandments that are, in essence, no differant than any other law given by God? Because we have outgrown those rules. When will we outgrow the other rules lain down by the Bible? Or even the Bible in its entirety? In other words, these books, known today as the basis of millions of peoples lives, will eventually go the way of Greek Mythology or Paganistic rituals.
It WILL happen. Give it time.
