01 - PAST: (Lily’s POV) = SEVERUS' 1st YEAR
She pushed the door of the compartment open, but all the seats were already taken. Smiling in greeting at the other students inside she closed the door and moved along the crowded corridor.
“Lily!” a girl’s voice echoed from behind her. Turning to look for the source of the voice she saw one of her housemate’s wave from behind her. “We’ve found an empty compartment at the back, you can come sit with us.”
“Sorry, Helen, I’m already sharing with someone else.” She called back.
“Alright, see you later.” The girl waved at her before turning around and walking away.
Lily sighed, she didn’t like to lie to her friends, but all she wanted right now, was a quiet compartment. Her head had been hurting for days and she had been unable to have a decent night sleep for over a week. She had even gone to a doctor with her mother, but he had just said that it was probably due to anxiety since she would be gone from home for a long time while on boarding school.
But Lily knew better. Her constant headaches that resembled too much her grandmother’s migraine for her liking, they were due to something magical, she was sure. She was just glad that she as soon as she would get to Hogwarts she could go straight to the infirmary to ask for something to help her other than just counseling.
She reached the next wagon and pushed the first compartment door open. There sat a pale looking boy alone at the window. His long dark hair didn’t look very healthy and his clothing seemed to be worn and used. It appeared to her that he looked much younger than the other First Years she had seen so far. He lowered the book he was reading and turned to look up at her with dark onyx eyes.
“Can I sit here? Everywhere else seems to be filled with noise.” She asked.
He nodded slowly and indicated with his hand for her to sit across him before concentrating again on his lecture.
Closing the door behind her again, Lily moved to the place the younger boy had indicated her. She let herself fall down on her seat with an exhausted sigh. Closing her eyes she leaned her head back and waited for the worst of the pain in her head to settle down.
The door opened again and Lily heard the voice of another boy asking if they could join them. Sighing annoyed at herself for sitting down with an obvious first year who would most likely want to befriend others, Lily prepared herself mentally for getting an onslaught of chaos in the compartment.
“I’m sorry, but you will have to look for another compartment.” The boy across her replied to the newcomer at the door. “This one is already occupied.”
“Oh…” Lily opened her eyes to see the disappointed look of the other boy. “Okay, we’ll look somewhere else.”
When the door closed Lily looked at the smaller boy across her. “I thought you were alone in here.”
He looked up from his lecture at her. “I’m not alone.” He pause before adding with a small smirk. “You’re here.” It sounded like that was the most obvious thing. “Besides you look like you could use some peace and quiet.”
She blinked for a moment at him before a smile started to grace her face. “You’re so going to get into Slytherin.” She said amused to him.
He shrugged.
“I’m Lily Evans, Third Year Gryffindor.” She said to him.
“Severus Snape, First Year and by your account most likely to get into Slytherin.” He introduced himself.
Lily smiled at the boy and extended her hand in greeting. “Well I hope that even if you end up in a different house, we can be friends.”
The pale boy seemed to be confused by her words and his dark eyes watched her for a moment as though unsure of her intent. Amused at his carefulness she could already see that she had been right with her thought about Slytherin.
Finally Severus reached shyly back.
The instant their hands touched a flash of white light seemed to engulf them, and Lily felt a sudden pull of magic around her.
She closed her eyes to protect them from the brightness and was glad to find that she could still feel Severus’ hand in her own. At least what ever was happening, she would not be alone in this.
“Daughter of the Raven…” a deep voice echoed inside her head.
Lily opened surprised her eyes and found herself standing in a large hall. Columns of blue and white stone showed the way towards something that looked like a throne. Each of them was marked by a different looking sword and staff lying in cross form one over the other.
“Come Daughter of the Raven…” the deep male voice seemed to be calling her from deep into the hall.
Lily turned to assure herself of Severus’ presence, but where she expected to find the pale boy, she found a child that looked to be part of this whole place. The boy next to her, although still resembling remarkably Severus seemed to be in a much better state of health. He was wearing long dark red robes and his hair was held back by a silver clip. His features seemed to have softened making him look like he was half of Lily’s age. Even the nose, which previously seemed a bit too large for his face seemed to fit perfectly with his features. It wasn’t that he had changed much, but enough to make him appear to her almost surreal.
“Come Daughter of the Raven…” the voice called again and Lily jumped startled in her place.
“What’s going on?” she whispered leaning warily closer to the boy, but he didn’t even seem to notice her presence. “Severus?” but instead of replying the boy began to move pass her towards the source of the voice calling once again.
Not wanting to let go of his hand she allowed him to pull her along and deeper into the hall. Her eyes examined warily her surroundings. She could see shadows moving one the walls behind the colums, but there seemed to be no source for them.
Finally they reached an open spaced area, and Lily looked up at a tall throne in a chamber that seemed to be covered with ice. On the throne sat an old and frightening, but also powerful and wise looking man. His size seemed enormous in comparison to a normal human, meaning that this man must be a giant. To his feet lay lazy two large wolves while on each shoulder sat a raven watching her intrigued.
The man wore long furry clothing to protect him from the icy winds that moved his long hair. Although strangely Lily couldn’t feel the difference of temperature in the air. Bangs of his hair fell to one side of his face covering it, and Lily somehow knew that this man was missing an eye.
Across his lap lay a long and deadly looking spear. He reminded Lily of an old Viking king with his dress up and all.
“Who are you?” she asked tightening her grip on Severus’ hand in a way that must surely be painful, still the boy did not make a sound. “Where are we?”
“Welcome to Walhalla, Daughter of the Raven, I am one who is called Odin.” The man spoke in a deep and vibrating voice that caused Lily to shudder unwillingly. “And I have called upon your presence.”
Lily’s eyes narrowed, she remembered hearing those name before, not the Raven one, but the other two, although at this moment it seemed to slip her mind where. “Why do you call me that?” she asked instead.
The raven on his left shoulder flapped his wings as though attempting to take flight. She looked scared at the bird and uneasily at the larger beasts at the ground. The raven let out a croaked sound, but did not attempt to leave the Odin’s shoulder. Its black eyes starred at her and she had the feeling that the animal was looking deep into her soul.
Somewhat scared she moved closer to Severus and pulled at his hand, but he did not seem to take any notice of her.
“You have wisdom in your soul, you are a child blessed by bothHuginn and Munin.” The man turned to look at the bird on his right shoulder before turning to her again. “And since you were able to hear my call I shall bestow upon you knowledge and power so that you may assist the Descendant of Loki against the rise of Ragnarök.”
It was then that Lily realized where she had heard all those strange names. “Merlin, you are the God King of the Asen!!” she exclaimed.
The man turned back to look at her, his face not having changed in expression. “You’re still young, by your reaction, and it has been long that I have gone and gotten involved with the live on Midgar, but things change.”
He lifted his spear from his lap and leaned it against his throne. The simple movement was filled with power and inner strength that Lily found herself flinching when the man finally moved to stand up from his throne. The two ravens rose from his shoulder and perched on the throne not taking their eyes from her, observing her.
She shuddered not from fear but from trepidation.
There was little Lily knew of the Northern Mythology, she had never been interested in things that were not linked in some way on another to her studies, the gaining of knowledge had always been her first more priority. She considered mythology simply a part of human necessity to align themselves with either good and evil and thus with guidance in form of gods. Yet now…
Odin seemed to tower over her when he came to a halt in front of her. He was even taller than Hagrid, and she had always thought the half-giant huge. The man lower himself to one knee, but even with this he seemed twice her height.
She gapped at him not realizing that she was hugging Severus non-reactive body to her like she was trying to protect the younger boy from this man that was a god.
She blinked a few times at Odin, the nervousness in her increasing. She didn’t know much about him, but one thing was very clear in her mind. The stories said that Odin had a twisted personality and that he was a frightening character, one could never be too sure to trust him.
“What is it you want?” she finally questioned, her voice tingling with her clearly confused emotions.
He raised an eyebrow at her and reached with his large hand for her face. Panic flooded her, but she found herself unable to move. A large finger lifted her face and she starred at the unnerving blue eyes.
“Frightened and yet you thirst for knowledge keeps you going.” He stated. “I like that.” He turned his eyes to Severus before he stood up and turned, his long cloak gliding through the air above her head. “Skuld!” he called out.
A shadow started to take shape and form and Lily watched amazed as a little girl, younger looking than Severus, appeared at the far left of the room. She had long blond hair, that was braided with feathers, her long and expensive looking robes where woven with intricate gold patterns. On her sleeveless arm she wore golden bracelets with red stones.
“You have called, father and I have come.” She said in a voice that seemed far older than the body she showed.
“Come, Norse Child, come and greet the Daughter of the Raven.” Odin said indicating her to move to them.
Skuld walked with a childlike glee towards them and smiled at Lily, but when she looked at Severus, her eyes widened. In surprise she turned to look at Odin, but the man did not appear to take any notice of Skuld’s reaction.
“Skuld,” Odin started and for the first time there seemed to be a smile on his lips. Lily felt herself more worried now than before. “You shall give the Daughter of the Raven the knowledge she seeks.”
Skuld’s face paled slightly. “Knowledge…?”
Odin moved back towards his throne and settled down again. Turning slightly bored to look at his guest he spoke up again. “Make her see… Let her see, make her your companion if needed.”
Skuld nodded slowly although Lily could clearly see that the little girl wanted to protest. The blond turned to her.
“Do not scare, I will not cause you pain.” Skuld said to her and reached with her small hand for Lily’s face. “Close your eyes…”
Lily wanted to say something but the look Odin gave her from his throne made her gulp and followed the order as instructed. She looked at Skuld and the girl smiled reassuringly at her. Closing her eyes she tried to relax.
Hands touched her, but there was no warmth or cold coming from them. Thumbs moved from her cheeks up to the side of her nose. Slowly they moved up towards her eyes, and Lily wanted it just to be quickly over. Gently the thumbs caressed her eyelids.
“I am Skuld, Third Sister of the Norse, Grand Seer of the Path of the Future.” Skuld’s voice seemed but a faint whisper in her ears. “Speak, Daughter of the Raven, Seeker of Knowledge, Mother of Sigyn, so that I may know your name.”
“Lily…” Lily answered. “Lilian Evans.” She corrected herself.
“I hear your name pact-holder.” Skuld replied.
Suddenly a flash of light seemed to burn in her eyes, it wasn’t painful, but there was a certain discomfort. It seemed as though something was being burned in the back of her eyes. The whole procedure seemed to go on forever.
She almost let go of Severus when Skuld released her. Her eyes watered and she looked through a blurry vision at Skuld. The girl stepped away from her and looked back at Odin.
“It is done.” She said.
Odin let a smirk cross his features. “Let us see how thing move from here then.”
Skuld bowed slightly.
Lily blinked a few times trying to hold back the tears and clear her vision. Closing her eyes tightly holding still onto Severus.
“What are you doing?” Severus voice brought her out of her stupor.
Opening her eyes in surprise she looked down at him pressed against her taller form. He looked up through his greasy bangs at her warily.
They were back and standing in the compartment in the train. She could see the scenery pass quickly when she looked at the window in complete disorientation. She glance back down to Severus, his dark eyes watching her curiously. Realizing their position she released him startled and blushed.
“Sorry.” She said fidging nervously with her shirt.
“Are you alright?” Severus said raising an eyebrow that reminded Lily too much of Odin.
“Su-Sure…” she said laughing nervously. “I’m fine.”
He narrowed his eyes at her for a long moment before nodding and settling down on his seat again.
