Ohhhhhhhh ... Lord English! I didn't recognize her species as something we'd seen before (but, then again, I read the whole series in about two weeks, so there is a ton of stuff that I missed the first time; my sister is currently reading it and she keeps emailing me about things that make me go "Wait, I don't remember that at all ...").
(Which incidentally is one reason I don't talk about the comic on my journal ... *g* I'm pretty sure that I'm missing a lot of obvious stuff long-time readers catch onto, so I don't really want to post about it ...)
Nice twist, though! Even without realizing that we've seen her species before -- which I didn't 'til you pointed it out XD -- I was very intrigued by the revelation that she's neither troll nor human ... like everyone else, I presume, I had totally fallen for the implication that UU/uu are trolls.
Also, I'm not sure if it was Roxy's obvious concern for her, or just knowing a little more about her, but I really am starting to like Calliope a lot, and I hope she doesn't die! (I'm still not sure if I trust her, but I think I'm less inclined to believe that her friendly-helpful attitude is all for show than I was before.)
And nice catch on the similarity of names with Li'l Cal and Calmasis!
I am also deeply intrigued by the Karkat-symbols on her/their sleeves ...
Oh, and also, I wonder if the fact that we've seen her now means that we are approaching a new chapter and a new switch in characters that will take us into Calliope and her brother's session?
Eheh. I'm ridiculously obsessed to keep track of Homestuck like this. ^^;
Look at this animation. It's where Doc Scratch's doll body turns into Lord English (because he's an excellent host). His looks matches Calliope's down to the spots on his cheeks, and we see that his blood is red, too.
The difference is that he's got revolving billiard ball eyes, and Calliope's are... well, they look kind of like Cal's eyes.
It's fully possible that what Lord English did (creating himself by means of killing the universe and spawning inside a dead omnipotent doll) is not typical of the species either. Or maybe it is? o_O
Calliope is such a sweet little fangirl, though. And she seems to be genuinely friends with the human kids. She's not telling them everything, but she obviously has reasons for that.
I mean, I'm inclined to believe her when she tells Jane
UU: yoU are a dear friend to me. yoU and yoUr chUms. yoU are all the only friends i have ever had.
I'm worried about her too.
The Karkat (or rather - Sufferer!) symbols on their sleeves still confuse me... It could be merely that Calliope has taken it up simply because she's a fan of troll history and might like the Sufferer's teachings - but then again, uu wouldn't.
I would love it if the next update starts with "Your name is CALLIOPE..."
Ohhhhh. I'm pretty sure I spent most of that animation looking away from the screen because of the flashing lights. ^^;; (I'm not seizure-prone or anything - I just dislike quick-flashing lights and really fast cuts! Which might partly explain why I was generally sort of confused about Lord English's presence in the story ...) Thank you for the link!

She is! I spent a lot of time not really trusting her and thinking that her friendliness was all going to turn out to be a lie, but no, I think it really is genuine and I like her a lot.

It could go the other way, too - it's possible, isn't it, that Calliope was in contact with the Sufferer and is the reason why he remembered the original world when no one else did?
I would love it if the next update starts with "Your name is CALLIOPE..."
Ah, that would explain the confusion. You're welcome!
I was wary about UU in the beginning too, because she could be literally anyone, and seemed to be a hemonymous troll who was not Karkat, which... yeah.

Oh! That's a possibility!
The other possibility that occurred to me just now is that it might simply be a symbol of burning handcuffs, which was a torture instrument in troll culture, after all. Or the symbol might be that to uu, but symbolize the Sufferer to UU?
