Tonight, in Clarkes

Dec 02, 2005 23:50

So, we were sitting in Clarkes this evening, having a quiet pint before heading home to steak and mushroom pudding. We were sitting by a window, and we could see this huge lorry, a 16 wheeler, trying to get around the small crossroads into the small one way street. There were cars parked on either side of the road, and the lorry simply didn't fit.

For twenty minutes, we listened to the motor tick over, and watched the indicators flash, and saw the traffic back up behind him. Then we ordered another pint and forgot about it.

A man came into the bar, ordered a pint, and asked if he could sit at our table, being one of the few vacant seats in the pub. He looked out at the lorry, still with indicators flashing, and still blocking the road.

"She's not going anywhere," he said, and took a deep draught of his pint.

"We've been watching it," we said. "I expect she'll get through soon."

"Not too soon," said our companion. "I'm the driver."
