I saw my new favorite anti-drug commerical last night! As soon as it was over I knew this would be an instant classic. Far better then this is your brain on drugs, far and away better then any of the celebrity ordered to do PSA bits, a universe better then "just say no".
Black and white setting. Camera pans around what looks to be a dank classroom filled with dour faced adults. A little boy maybe 7-8 years old stands up in the middle of this room and begins his little speech.
"I will start drinking socially, you know at parties and weekends with friends, but then in two years my addiction will progress into full blown alocholisim. I'll lose everything, my job my wife my unborn children maybe even my home. ..."
My version is not word for word, but close enough. He goes on to wrecking his car possible jail time and a bunch of other bullshit I could not hear over my own laughter.
That's what happened .. Out last night with friends (obviously none of us ever got the messages in these ads) and this commerical comes on. There was only about 10 people in the bar as it was a little early on a Monday, so my thinking out loud comment was well heard. When it first came on everyone just kind of stared blankly in wonder and silence. I heard a "wha the fuh?" and that's when the laugh came out of me. It's rare but it happens. A big booming gut swell of a barrel laugh. The whole place looks over and they are grinning now too because someone broke the ice under this awkward moment. They now knew it was alright to laugh at this absurd bit of television (that was only intending to help us by the way). Still laughing I shook my head and through gasps for air stated "I really shouldn't be laughing at this, but God Damn that's funny."
All I was really doing was reacting and thinking out loud, it was the timing that could not have been better.
Anti drug or anti drinking commericals just make me want to get fucked up.
God job Ad Council.
