When “The Management” rewarded SHINee with a vacation period, they decided to follow the example of Super Junior. The members jumped at the chance to travel somewhere far away, where they could just enjoy themselves without being recognized. That’s how they found themselves touring Schwerin Castle on their way from Berlin to Copenhagen on a bright April morning.
“See, didn’t I tell you it would be spectacular,” Key nudged Minho.
“Yeah, it’s really, um, grand,” responded Minho, trying his best to humor Key. Architectural appreciation was not his thing, and his stomach wasn’t adjusting well to the heavy German cuisine.
“It’s like something out of a fairy tale,” gushed Taemin happily, enthralled by the statuary and decorative arts adorning every surface within the castle. He had done well in his European history course in school and was enjoying the opportunity to see in person the sort of thing he’d only read about until this trip.
“The tulips out in the garden are really something,” Onew added with a wistful glance out the window. He preferred the fresh air of the outdoors, but was indulging Key’s artistic side to keep the peace.
The tour was finally over, and the members were free to wander on their own for a while. They found themselves the only occupants of a grand hall with a soaring ceiling.
Onew couldn’t help himself. “LA!” He cried out. His Onew Sangtae outburst reduced his four friends to fits of giggles. The sound reverberated through the hall as they got themselves under control. No one appeared on the scene to scold them, so they enjoyed having the magnificent space all to themselves.
“I have an idea,” Jonghyun said with a mischievous grin. The others turned to face him.
“Dduluhjyuh kkaejildeut han toomyunghan naegae, dalgeomhan dokmool pujideut,” he sang out, looking at Onew and making a dramatic gesture.
“Hayakae uluhbooteun nae oraen sangchyuhga,” Onew crooned, pretending to brush off his shoe as he met Key’s eyes.
“Nuhyae gaseumsok gipgaepuhjyuhdo,” added Key, spinning around to point at the youngest two.
“Jabeun deut hal ddae pagodeuneun geuromae bineul nalkaroum,” they continued, Minho’s voice an octave below Taemin’s, the others providing back-up vocals.
“Sanso gateun nuh,” they finished together. The sound of their mingled voices continued to resonate through the hall, echoing off the stone walls.
The five young men were all grins as they continued to sing snippets from their favorite songs, each member choosing in turn and inviting the others to join in. This went on for nearly half an hour before they heard a smattering of applause from the doorway. A small crowd had gathered to enjoy the sweet voices of the uniformly handsome and stylish Asian boys singing in a foreign tongue.
The five turned as one toward the applause, and out of habit ingrained through countless hours of practice, bowed and introduced themselves.
“Wir sind Koreas SHINee. Vielen Dank,” added Key, bowing again. Leave it to Key to be prepared for praise in any language.
Two Japanese girls in the crowd squealed in joy and asked the young men for autographs. It was the first time in days that they’d been recognized, so they were happy to oblige, just this once.
They left the castle arm-in-arm and hand-in-hand, trotting down the stairs and out into the fresh spring air.
“Didn’t I tell you it would be great?” gloated Key.
a/n: One reason I enjoy writing fanfic is the research needed to keep in character, or to keep events in canon. I ran the pic prompt through TinEye to discover that the photo is Schloss Schwerin, near Berlin, Germany. Its setting is stunning!
