"Happy Valentines Day."
Jonghyun blinked when he heard Minho's voice and glanced up to see what he wanted before turning his attention back to his Advance Calculus book. His eyebrows furrowed for a moment when he looked back and saw his boyfriend holding a large bouquet of flowers and one of those cheesy heart shaped chocolate boxes. The look of obvious confusion on Jonghyun's face caused Minho to grin softly as he repeated himself, shaking the gifts in his hands.
"Happy Valentines Day."
With a quick check to his phone for the date and then to the calender above his desk in the corner of their small living room. When there was no signs of this being some sort of trick or April fools stunt, Jonghyun turned back to his tree of a lover and sighed. This was completely out of the blue for him since there wasn't a romantic bone in Minho's body. Jonghyun had checked and surgically removed each and every one the first day they had even decided to start dating, which was a day every girl in their high schools had hated.
"Minho...um baby what the fuck are you doing?" Jonghyun gave the quickest of smiles before turning back to his homework. Minho placed down the flowers and candy out of Jonghyun's study radius and pulled up a chair to sit down next to Jonghyun and watch him work. The flash of red in his peripheral was making it hard to concentrate and Minho's presence was begging to be recognized. And people said Jonghyun was the needy one in the relationship.
"Alright Ho-oh what do you want?" Minho flashed a grin at the use of the cheesy nickname before scooting a tad closer and threading his fingers through the hair at the nape of Jonghyun's neck. Jonghyun hated when Minho did that because they both knew it was one of those spots that made Jonghyun agree to anything that came out of Minho's mouth next. Which was how he ended up taking a shower and dressing in a pair of jeans and a simple black button up shirt, scowling out the passenger side window. This wasn't Minho. Aliens had finally come down and switched on the chip they had planted in his head, Jonghyun was sure of it.
As Minho drove the car up into the parking lot of a restaurant Jonghyun brightened up and looked around. His scowl came back immediately when he saw it was one of those restaurants. The overly romantic restaurant with the waiters using fake French accents and trying to create that perfect mood. Jonghyun placed his best 'You're going to die' glare on Minho's back as he followed him inside and crossed his arms. He half wished he'd taken his cousin's advice and just date Jessica but every time he had tried to approach her a certain long limbed soccer addict would pop up and do everything in his power to prevent that. Where was Kibum when you need him?
Oh right sucking face with that Changmin character. Of course.
"Your table is this way." The waiter drawled out and Jonghyun stepped on the back of Minho's shoes as they were led to their table in a corner of the restaurant. After ordering two drinks and an appetizer Jonghyun finally let loose in his best whispered voice.
"What the hell Choi! I thought we agreed no...this." Jonghyun hissed out as he waved a hand to indicate the flocks of couples giggling and giving each other gooey eyes. He had the feeling he was going to throw up but Minho's fingers were curling around his wrist and holding him still. Jonghyun raised an eyebrow and sat back down, looking from Minho's hand to the serious expression on his face. Their relationship had always been easy going. Neither wanting more than what they knew the other could provide them. Simple and clean.
"Is this all you want out of our relationship?" Jonghyun felt struck by Minho's words and furrowed his eyebrows as he thought it over. It took a moment for him to realize that this wasn't just something out of the blue. Minho had been doing little things like this since they'd first gotten together. The fleeting touches when Jonghyun was done. The way Minho would always have Jonghyun's favorite tea hot and ready to go in a mug when he came in from a hard day of classes at the university. How Minho would be quieter than normal, which was irony in itself, and listen to everything on Jonghyun's mind that kept him awake at nights. Even when Jonghyun would contort and twist his body in the weirdest ways when he slept, Minho would still be pressed close to him, warm arms wrapped around his body.
It had taken close to a year and a half for Jonghyun to see Minho for what he really was. A loving, caring boyfriend who wanted to be appreciated. It made his stomach twist in a sickening way as he turned his hand and laced their fingers together. He darted his tongue out to wet his lips before shaking his head.
"No it's not."
The rest of the evening progressed in relatively equal peace. Jonghyun was still in a mood for being in such a cheesy restaurant but he didn't let go of Minho's hand until the desert came along and he had to use his knife to fight of the taller boy's fork while he tried to eat it all for himself. After a while Minho conceeded defeat and settled back into his chair, letting Jonghyun feed him out of pity. It wasn't often when Jonghyun actually won something and he was determined to change his ways and show Minho he actually did love him.
"So about those flowers...." Minho raised an eyebrow in question, chewing on the bit of cake in his mouth. "...you're going to give those to your mom or something right?"
"Yeah Jonghyun. I just bought them to give you a scare."
"Asshole..."
"I love you too."
